What is the cause of evil (forgetfulness, fear, distress, addiction, hardship, grief, dissension, etc.)?

What is the cause of evil (forgetfulness, fear, distress, addiction, hardship, grief, dissension, etc.)?

58:19 Satan has overcome them, so he made them forget the remembrance of Allah. Those are the party of Satan. No doubt, indeed, the party of Satan, they (will be) the losers.

58:10 Secret counsels are only from Satan, that he may grieve those who believe, but he cannot harm them in anything except by Allah's permission. And upon Allah let the believers put (their) trust.

(This Verse explicitly states that “secret counsels” (if interpreting them as anxious thoughts or paranoia, etc.) are from Satan to cause grief, but they cannot harm you without God’s permission. And you have to put your trust in God (58:10)) (Allah knows best)

2:268 Satan promises you poverty and orders you to immorality, while Allah promises you forgiveness from Him and bounty. And Allah is all-Encompassing and Knowing.

(What Satan promises are just whispers intended to cause grief and so on; the remedy is to replace that mental image with trust in God, remembering Allah, and mentioning the name of Allah) (Allah knows best)

35:5 O mankind, indeed, the promise of Allah is true. So (let) not the life of the world deceive you, and (let) not the Deceiver deceive you about Allah. 35:6 Indeed, Satan is an enemy to you, so take him as an enemy. He only invites his party to be among the companions of the Blaze.

41:49 Man (does) not get tired of praying (for) [the] good, but if the evil touches him, then he gives up hope (and) despairs.

(Believers should not give up hope and despair. You must establish prayer (2:3) and be patient (2:45)) (Allah knows best)

5:23 Said two men from those who feared upon whom Allah had Favored, "Enter upon them (through) the gate then when you have entered it, then indeed, you (will be) victorious. And upon Allah then put your trust if you are believers.

(The Verses suggest “trust over fear.” The remedy is putting trust in God. By shifting focus from the “threat” to the Creator, the fear of people may be gone) (Allah knows best)

5:90 O you who believe, verily, intoxicants and games of chance and (sacrifices at) altars and divining arrows are an abomination from the work of Satan, so avoid it so that you may be successful. 5:91 Satan only intends to cause enmity and hatred between you through intoxicants and gambling, and to hinder you from the remembrance of Allah and from the prayer. So will you be the ones who abstain?

(The source of addiction is “the work of Satan,” with the purpose of hindering you from remembrance and prayer) (Avoiding these abominations is directly linked to being “successful”) (Allah knows best)

20:117 Then We said, "O Adam, indeed, this is an enemy to you and to your wife. So (let) him not drive you both from Paradise so that you would suffer.

114:1 Say, "I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind, 114:2 The King of mankind, 114:3 The God of mankind, 114:4 From the evil of the whisperer, the one who withdraws, 114:5 The one who whispers in the breasts of mankind, 114:6 From jinn and men.

(It is interpreted that the fear of people or outcomes is a deception and a whisper) (Allah knows best)

12:42 And he said to the one whom he thought that he (would be) saved of both of them, "Mention me to your master." But Satan made him forget the mention to his master, so he remained in the prison for several years.

18:63 He said, "Did you see, when we retired to the rock? Then indeed, I forgot the fish. And none made me forget it except Satan that I mention it. And it took its way into the sea amazingly."

38:41 And remember Our slave Job, when he called to his Lord, "That, Satan has touched me with distress and suffering."

4:119 "And I will surely mislead them and surely arouse desires in them, and I will surely order them so they will surely cut off the ears of the cattle and I will surely order them so they will surely change the creation of Allah." And whoever takes Satan as a friend besides Allah, then surely he (has) lost a manifest loss. 4:120 He promises them and arouses desires in them. And Satan does not promise them except deception.

12:100 And he raised his parents upon the throne, and they fell down to him prostrate. And he said, "O my father, this is the interpretation of my dream of before. Verily, my Lord has made it true. And indeed, He was good to me when He took me out of the prison, and brought you from the bedouin life after Satan had caused discord between my brothers and me. Indeed, my Lord is Most Subtle to what He wills. Indeed, He is the All-Knower, the All-Wise.

17:26 And give the relatives his right, and the needy, and the wayfarer, and do not spend wastefully. 17:27 Indeed, the spendthrifts are brothers of the devils. And Satan is ungrateful to his Lord.

17:53 And say to My slaves to say that which is best. Indeed, Satan sows discord between them. Indeed, Satan is a clear enemy to man.

19:83 Do you not see that We have sent the devils upon the disbelievers, inciting them with incitement.

2:177 It is not righteousness that you turn your faces towards the east and the west but righteous is he who believes in Allah , the Last Day, the Angels, the Book, and the Prophets and gives wealth in spite of love for it to the near relatives, the orphans, the needy, the wayfarer, and those who ask, and in freeing the necks (slaves); and (who) establish prayer and give zakah and those who fulfill their covenant when they make it; and those who are patient in suffering, hardship, and periods of stress. Those are the ones who are true and it is those who are the righteous.

(Righteousness is also being patient during “periods of stress,” “suffering,” and “hardship”) (Allah knows best)

43:36 And whoever turns away from the remembrance of the Most Gracious, We appoint for him a devil, then he is a companion to him.

6:121 And (do) not eat of that on which Allah’s name has not been mentioned, and indeed, it (is) grave disobedience. And indeed, the devils inspire [to] their friends so that they dispute with you, and if you obey them, indeed, you (would) be the polytheists.

2:150 And from wherever you start forth [so] turn your face in the direction of Al-Masjid Al-Haraam. And wherever you are, [so] turn your faces (in) its direction, so that people will not have any argument against you except those who wronged among them; so do not fear them, but fear Me. And that I may complete My favor upon you, [and] so that you may be guided.

(You must fear God, not people. And put your trust in God (10:84)) (Allah knows best)

5:54 O you who believe, whoever among you turns back from his religion, then soon Allah (will) bring a people whom He loves and they love Him, humble towards the believers (and) stern towards the disbelievers; striving in (the) way (of) Allah and not fearing the blame (of) a critic. That (is the) Grace (of) Allah, He grants (to) whom He wills. And Allah (is) All-Encompassing, All-Knowing.

4:77 Have you not seen those who (when) it was said to them, "Restrain your hands and establish the prayer and give the zakah?" Then when fighting was ordained on them, then a group of them fear the people as (they) fear Allah or (with) more intense fear. And they said, "Our Lord why have You ordained upon us fighting? Why (do) not You postpone (it for) us to a near term." Say, "Enjoyment (of) the world (is) little, and the Hereafter (is) better for (those) who fear. And you will not be wronged (even as much as) a hair on a date-seed."

59:13 Certainly, you(r) (arouse), in their breasts, (a) fear [is] more intense than Allah's. That (is) because they (are) a people (who do) not understand.

10:84 And Moses said, "O my people, if you have believed in Allah, then put your trust in Him, if you are Muslims."

(Note: "Muslim" is an Arabic word meaning "one who submits (to God)") (Allah knows best)

13:28 Those who believed and their hearts find satisfaction in the remembrance of Allah. No doubt, in the remembrance of Allah the hearts find satisfaction."

7:26 O Children (of) Adam, verily We have sent down to you clothing, it covers your shame and (as) an adornment. And the clothing (of) [the] righteousness - that (is) best. That (is) from (the) Signs of Allah so that they may remember.

16:98 So when you recite the Qur’an, seek refuge in Allah from the Satan, the accursed. 16:99 Indeed he does not have any authority over those who believe and put their trust in their Lord. 16:100 His authority (is) only over those who take him as an ally and those who [they] associate partners with Him.

25:18 They say, "Glory be to You, it was not proper for us that we/(to) take besides You any protectors. But You gave them and their forefathers comforts until they forgot the Message and became a people ruined."

34:41 They will say, "Glory be to You, You (are) our Protector, not them. Nay, they used (to) worship the jinn, most of them (were) believers in them."

(Note: Iblees was of the jinn) (Allah knows best)

37:158 And they have made a relationship between Him and [between] the jinn, but certainly, the jinn know that they (will) surely be brought.

47:25 Indeed, those who return on their backs after [the] guidance [what] (has) become clear to them, Shaitaan/(Satan) enticed [for] them and prolonged hope for them.

68:51 And indeed, those who disbelieve would almost, surely, make you slip with their look(s) when they hear the Message, and they say, "Indeed, he (is) surely mad."

9:108 Do not stand in it - ever. A mosque founded on righteousness from the first day is more worthy that you stand in it. Within it are men who love to purify themselves; and Allah loves those who purify themselves.

(People should also purify themselves from bad thoughts) (Allah knows best)

6:64 Say, "Allah saves you from it and from every distress, yet you associate partners."

3:154 Then He sent down on you, after the distress, security - slumber overcoming a group of you, while another group certainly worried about themselves, thinking about Allah other than the truth - the thought of ignorance, saying, "Is there anything for us from the matter?" Say, "Indeed all the matter of it is for Allah." They hide in themselves what they do not reveal to you. They say, "If there was anything for us from the matter we would not have been killed here." Say, "If you were in your houses, those on whom death was decreed would have surely come out to their places of death. And that Allah might test what is in your breasts and that He may purge what is in your hearts. And Allah is All-Aware of what is in the breasts.

(Distress should not be regarded as a way of self-destruction, but as a way of purification from it (3:154)) (Allah knows best)

48:4 He is the One Who sent down tranquility into the hearts (qulubi) of the believers that they may increase in faith with their faith. And for Allah are the hosts of the heavens and the earth, and Allah is All-Knower, All-Wise.

(The word “qulubi” is traditionally interpreted/translated as “heart/s”; in fact, it means both “heart” and “mind,” because it used to mean “the heart of the Self”) (Allah knows best)

8:45 O you who believe, when you meet a force, then be firm (fa-uth’butu) and remember Allah much, so that you may (be) successful.

(For example, in the case of glossophobia, or the fear of public speaking, etc., Verse 8:45 says, “when you meet a force, then be firm and remember Allah much.” Any bad thought, like imagining the worst-case scenario in a meeting, is to be replaced by remembering God and being firm (8:45), which in the context of such a meeting implies being “constant / continuing / remaining” speaking while remembering God, rather than running away or having “worst-case scenario” thoughts) (When a catastrophizing thought hits, the instruction is immediate: seek refuge (7:200, 114:1-6). This acts as a “pattern interrupt” for the brain. The remembrance of Allah is greatest (29:45)) (The root of “uth’butu” (be firm) is “Tha-Ba-Ta,” and it means to be firm, steadfast, constant, established, remain in (a place), preserve in doing, continue, endure, etc.) (Allah knows best)

7:200 And if an evil suggestion comes to you from Satan, then seek refuge in Allah. Indeed, He is All-Hearing, All-Knowing. 7:201 Indeed, those who fear when an evil thought from Satan touches them, they remember and then they are those who see.

12:86 He said, "I only complain (of) my suffering and my grief to Allah, and I know from Allah what/(that which) you (do) not know. 12:87 O my sons, go and find out about Joseph and his brother and despair not of the Mercy of Allah . Indeed, no one despairs of the Mercy of Allah except the disbelieving people."

(Verse 12:86 suggests that feeling some grief may be normal, but one should direct that “complaint” and sorrow to God rather than letting it turn into despair (12:87). And there is a way out: Verse 13:28 says, “Those who believed and their hearts find satisfaction in the remembrance of Allah. No doubt, in the remembrance of Allah the hearts find satisfaction.") (Note: “hearts” in Verse 13:28 also means “minds”) (Allah knows best)

5:67 O Messenger, convey that which has been revealed to you from your Lord, and if you do not, then you have not conveyed His Message. And Allah will protect you from the people. Indeed, Allah does not guide the disbelieving people.

16:127 And be patient, and your patience (is) not but from Allah. And (do) not grieve over them and (do) not be in distress for what they plot.

18:16 And when you withdraw from them and that which they worship except Allah, then retreat to the cave. Your Lord will spread for you of His Mercy and will facilitate for you your affair in ease."
