Is Surah 9 the most violent Chapter in the Qur'an and abrogates peaceful Chapters?
9:5 Then, when the sacred months have passed, then kill the polytheists wherever you find them and seize them and besiege them and sit (in wait) for them at every place of ambush. But if they repent and establish prayer and give the zakah, then leave their way. Indeed, Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
(There is no any abrogation in the Qur’an. (See the link below “Are there any abrogated verses in the Qur'an?”). Chapter 9 confirms that fighting is in self-defense, and against oppression, just like in other Chapters of the Qur’an, because that’s the context of Chapter 9. In addition, Verses in other Chapters say similar sentences: “kill them wherever you find them” (2:191), “kill them wherever you find them” (4:91). And the context of these other Verses is clearly about self-defense too)(Some non-Muslims call Verse 9:5 “the verse of the sword”, but the Qur’an does not support such a name, and the word “sword” is not mentioned in the entire Qur’an; on the other hand, the word “sword” is mentioned more than 400 times in the Bible)(Allah knows best)
9:6 And if anyone of the polytheists seek your protection then grant him protection until he hears the Words of Allah. Then escort him to his place of safety. That is because they are a people who do not know.
(Verse 9:6 confirms that fighting is in self-defense, because if the enemies’ intention is other than fighting (e.g. seeking your protection), then they are not killed)(Allah knows best)
9:8 How while, if they gain dominance over you, they do not regard (the ties of) kinship with you or covenant of protection? They satisfy you with their mouths, but their hearts refuse, and most of them are defiantly disobedient. 9:9 They exchange the Verses of Allah for a little price, and they hinder from His way. Indeed, evil is what they used to do. 9:10 With regard to a believer, they do not respect (the ties) of kinship or covenant of protection. And it is they who are the transgressors.
(The polytheists do not respect the kinship or covenant of protection, “and it is they who are the transgressors” (9:10))(Allah knows best)
9:12 And if they break their oaths after their treaty and defame your religion, then fight the leaders of disbelief, indeed, their oaths are nothing to them - so that they may cease. 9:13 Will you not fight a people who broke their oaths and determined to drive out the Messenger and they began (to attack) you the first time? Do you fear them? But Allah has more right that you should fear Him, if you are believers.
(According to Verse 9:12, the purpose of fighting is that “they may cease”, so the context is self-defense)(According to Verse 9:13, the enemies attacked first, so Muslims defended themselves)(Allah knows best)
9:28 O you who believe, indeed, the polytheists are unclean (najasun), so let them not come near Al-Masjid Al-Haraam after this, their year. And if you fear poverty, then soon Allah will enrich you from His Bounty, if He wills. Indeed, Allah is All-Knower, All-Wise.
(The polytheists are unclean (najasun). The root of “najasun” is “Nun-Jiim-Siin”, and it means “to be unclean, impure / filthy / dirty. It is of two kinds: one that can be seen by sight, the other that can be perceived by intelligence”, so according to the root dictionary, “unclean” is not necessarily physical, but also, for example, about their reasoning)(This interpretation is confirmed by Verse 4:49, “do you not see those who claim purity for themselves? Nay, Allah, He purifies whom He wills”; so this Verse may imply that it is not physical, because anyone can clean their own body, while in that context, God purifies you; the previous Verse (4:48) mentions those who associate partners with God (4:48), so Verse 4:49 is in the context of “disbelief”)(Another point is that Verse 9:28 specifies “Al-Masjid Al-Haraam”, not “any mosque”)(Allah knows best)
9:29 Fight those who do not believe in Allah and in the Last Day, and they do not make unlawful what Allah has made unlawful and His Messenger, and they do not acknowledge the religion of the truth, from those who were given the Scripture, until they pay the jizyah willingly, while they are subdued.
(Verse 9:29 indicates who are the ones to be fought – those who do not obey / submit, and are disbelievers, because they are the ones who oppress (9:8), and attacked first (9:13). A Muslim can never oppress and would never fight other Muslims; by definition, a Muslim is never a criminal (68:35-36), because the Arabic word “Muslim” means “one who submits (to God)”. If you do not obey / submit to God, then you are not a Muslim (aka “you are not submitting”))(There is no compulsion in Verse 9:29, the Verse says that the payment is done willingly. The context is that the payment is in exchange of security; on the other hand, Non-Muslims force people to pay taxes; if the disbelievers are subdued, they stop attacking)(The context of Chapter 9 is self-defense (9:8-10, 9:12-13, 9:40, 9:61, 9:64-66, 9:107))(Allah knows best)
9:30 And the Jews said, "Uzair is son of Allah." And the Christians said, "Messiah is son of Allah." That is their saying with their mouths, they imitate the saying of those who disbelieved before. (May) Allah destroy them. How deluded are they.
(They are not fought because they just said something “with their mouths”, so in this case they do not fight against Muslims. Verse 16:126 says “retaliate with the like of that with which you were afflicted”)(Allah knows best)
9:34 O you who believe, indeed, many of the rabbis and the monks surely eat the wealth of the people in falsehood, and hinder from the way of Allah. And those who hoard the gold and silver, and do not spend it in the way of Allah, give them tidings of a painful punishment. 9:35 The Day it will be heated in the Fire of Hell, and their foreheads, and their flanks and their backs will be branded with it, "This is what you hoarded for yourselves, so taste what you used to hoard."
(In this case, Jews and Christians do other than fighting against Muslims, so they are warned about being punished in the Fire of Hell, rather than by Muslims)(Allah knows best)
9:40 If you do not help him, certainly, Allah helped him when those who disbelieved drove him out, the second of two, when they both were in the cave, he said to his companion, "Do not grieve, indeed, Allah is with us." Then Allah sent down His tranquility upon him, and supported him with forces which you did not see, and made the word of those who disbelieved the lowest, while the Word of Allah is the highest. And Allah is All-Mighty, All-Wise.
9:61 And among them are those who hurt the Prophet and say, "He is an ear." Say, "An ear of goodness for you that believes in Allah and believes the believers and is a mercy to those who believe among you." And those who hurt the Messenger of Allah - for them is a painful punishment. … 9:64 The hypocrites fear lest a Surah be revealed about them, informing them of what is in their hearts. Say, "Mock, indeed, Allah (will) bring forth what you fear." 9:65 And if you ask them, they will surely say, "We were only conversing and playing." Say, "Is it Allah and His Verses and His Messenger that you were mocking?" 9:66 Make no excuse; verily, you have disbelieved after your belief. If We pardon a party of you, We will punish a party, because they were criminals.
9:95 They will swear by Allah to you when you returned to them, that you may turn away from them. So turn away from them, indeed, they are impure and their abode is Hell, a recompense for what they used to earn.
9:107 And those who take a mosque (for) harm and disbelief and division among the believers, and as a station for whoever warred against Allah and His Messenger before. And they will surely swear, "we wish only the good." And Allah bears witness that indeed they are liars.
9:122 And it is not for the believers that they go forth all together. So if a party from every group among them doesn’t go forth that they may obtain understanding in the religion, and that they may warn their people when they return to them, so that they may beware. 9:123 O you who believe, fight the disbelievers who are close to you, and let them find harshness in you. And know that Allah is with those who fear.
(Verses 9:122-123 are in the context of war. There is self-defense in Chapter 9 (9:8-10, 9:12-13, 9:40, 9:61, 9:64-66, 9:107))(Allah knows best)
2:190 And fight in the way of Allah those who fight you, and do not transgress. Indeed, Allah does not like the transgressors. 2:191 And kill them wherever you find them, and drive them out from wherever they drove you out, and oppression is worse than killing. And do not fight them near Al-Masjid Al-Haraam until they fight you there. Then if they fight you, then kill them. Such is the reward of the disbelievers. 2:192 Then if they cease, then indeed, Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
(Self-defense)(There is no such thing as “violent chapter” or “the most violent chapter” in the Qur’an, but the Verses about fighting are in the context of self-defense and against oppression, in the entire Qur’an (e.g. 2:190-192). So, there is no irrational, unlawful or unjustified violence in the Qur’an. Self-defense is not the origin/root/source of violence. On the other hand, the Bible tells in 1 Samuel 15:3 about putting to death women, children, babies, cattle, etc; and in Ezekiel 9:5-6 there is killing of old men, women, mothers and children)(See the link below, “Is the Bible corrupted?”)(Allah knows best)
60:8 Allah does not forbid you from those who do not fight you in the religion and do not drive you out of your homes, that you deal kindly and justly with them. Indeed, Allah loves those who act justly.
