How many Angels were talking to Mary?
3:42 And when the Angels said, "O Mary, indeed Allah has chosen you and purified you and chosen you above the women of the worlds. 3:43 "O Mary, be obedient to your Lord and prostrate and bow down with those who bow down." 3:44 That is from the news of the unseen - We reveal it to you. And you were not with them when they cast their pens as to which of them takes charge of Mary; nor were you with them when they were disputing. 3:45 When the Angels said, "O Mary, indeed, Allah gives you glad tidings of a word from Him, his name is Messiah, Jesus, son of Mary, honored in this world and in the Hereafter and among those brought near. 3:46 And he will speak to the people in the cradle and in maturity; and (he will be) of the righteous."
(The Angels talked to Mary (3:42-46), and according to Verse 3:44, “that is from the news of the unseen”, so one interpretation is that the “news of the unseen” are the sentences said by the Angels, which, on one hand, was not known by the Prophet, because Verse 3:44 says, “We reveal it to you. And you were not with them” (“you” is masculine singular), and, on the other hand, Mary did not see the Angels either. Someone can be inspired with words, but, it does not mean that you saw the One Who inspired it (7:160, 8:12, 10:87, 12:15, 14:13-14, 16:68, etc.). There is also no mention of Mary seeking refuge from the Angels, while, in Verse 19:18, she sought refuge from the Spirit when he appeared to her. The Spirit appeared as a physical single man (19:17), on the other hand, there is no mention of the Angels appearing to Mary in Verses 3:42-45, but they were disputing to which of them would take charge of Mary (3:44), as if none of them appeared physically to Mary yet, so not all of them could take charge of her. So, it seems that the event in Verses 3:42-45 took place at a different time, because the Angel who took charge of Mary had not been selected yet. In conclusion, at first, several (unseen) Angels spoke to her (3:42-45), and in a later event, one of them appeared as man, after being selected, and talked to her (19:19))(Allah knows best)
3:47 She said, "My Lord how will I have a child when no man has touched me?" He said, "Thus Allah creates what He wills. When He decrees a matter, then He only says to it, "Be," and it becomes.
(After Mary was informed by the Angels (3:42-46), Mary asked the Lord about the matter (3:47), so, she did not address her question to the Angels, as if she had not seen the Angels or as if the Angels were not present. There is also no mention of Mary seeking refuge from them, while in Verse 19:18 she sought refuge from the Spirit when he appeared to her. So, Verse 3:47 confirms that there are two different events, because, in Verse 3:47, no Angel appeared physically to her yet)(Allah knows best)
19:16 And mention in the Book Mary, when she withdrew from her family to an eastern place. 19:17 Then she took a screen from them. Then We sent to her Our Spirit, then he appeared to her in the likeness of a well-proportioned man. 19:18 She said, "Indeed, I seek refuge with the Most Gracious from you, if you are God fearing." 19:19 He said, "I am only a Messenger from your Lord, that I may bestow on you a pure son." 19:20 She said, "How can I have a son when no man has touched me, and I am not unchaste?" 19:21 He said, "Thus; your Lord said, 'It is easy for Me, and so that We will make him a sign for mankind and a Mercy from Us. And it is a matter decreed.'" 19:22 So she conceived him, and she withdrew with him to a remote place.
(These Verses in Chapter 19 took place at a different time: “when she withdrew from her family”)(In Verse 19:20, she asks to the Spirit about the same matter than that which she asked to the Lord in Verse 3:47, as if she did not hear an answer with her ears before, because she was alone (she did not see the Angels), but this time (Verses in Chapter 19) she talked face to face to the Angel, and the Angel told her what God said (19:21))(A difference between the Verses in Chapter 3 and Chapter 19 is that, in Chapter 19, she sought protection from the Spirit appearing to her, while, in Chapter 3, it seems she did not see the Angels in order to seek refuge. So, she asked the Lord about that matter instead of asking the angels, because she found herself alone)(Allah knows best)
42:51 And it is not for any human that Allah should speak to him except by revelation/inspiration or from behind a veil or (by) sending a messenger then he reveals/inspires (fayuhiya), by His permission, what He wills. Indeed, He is Most High, the Most Wise.
(Verse 42:51 confirms that the messengers can inspire, by God’s permission)(The root of “yuhiya” (reveals) is “Waw-Ha-Ya”, and it means “to indicate / reveal / suggest, put a thing into (the mind), inspire, speak secretly, etc”. So according to some meanings of the word “yuhiya”, it could imply that the Angels did not talk to Mary the same way than the Spirit did, but, for example, “yuhiya” could imply putting the news into someone’s mind)(Allah knows best)
16:2 He sends down the Angels with the inspiration of His Command, upon whom He wills of His slaves, that "Warn that there is no god except Me, so fear Me."
