Circumcision in Islam?

Circumcision in Islam?

12:111 Verily, in their stories is a lesson for men of understanding. It is not an invented narration, but a confirmation of that which was before it and a detailed explanation of all things, and a guidance and mercy for a people who believe.

(There is no mention of circumcision in the Qur’an. Different schools differ about circumcision being obligatory or not. But the omission of it in the Qur’an could imply that it is not obligatory. On the other hand, there are contradictions about it in the hadith, because some hadith mention circumcision in a list of practices known as fitra. However, there are other hadiths which do not name circumcision as part of the characteristics of fitra)(Allah knows best)

7:157 Those who follow the Messenger, the unlettered Prophet, whom they find written with them in the Torah and the Gospel. He commands them to the right and forbids them from the wrong, and he makes lawful for them the pure things and makes unlawful for them the impure things and he relieves them of their burden and the fetters which were upon them. So those who believe in him, and honor him, and help him and follow the light, which has been sent down with him, those are the successful ones."

(The Jews circumcise. One point is that the law was more severe for the Jews because of their wrongdoing. For example, it was more severe in the matter of the Sabbath (16:124), so the Qur’an relieves them. Maybe the same could be applied to circumcision, but it is not explicitly mentioned in the Qur’an)(Allah knows best)

4:160 Then for the wrongdoing of those who were Jews, We made unlawful for them good things which had been lawful for them, and for their hindering many from the way of Allah.

2:135 And they said, "Be Jews or Christians, then you will be guided." Say, "Nay, the religion of Abraham, the upright; and he was not of those who associated partners."

(According to Verses 2:120 and 2:135, the Jews do not follow the true religion anymore, so you do not have to follow that in which they differ from the Qur’an)(Allah knows best)

2:120 And the Jews and the Christians will never be pleased with you until you follow their religion. Say, "Indeed, the Guidance of Allah is the Guidance." And if you follow their desires after what has come to you of the knowledge, you will have neither any protector from Allah nor any helper.

27:76 Indeed, this Qur’an relates to the Children of Israel most of that (concerning which) they differ in it.

16:123 Then We revealed to you to follow the religion of Abraham, upright; and he was not of those who associate."

(Muslims are commanded to follow the religion of Abraham (3:95, 16:123, 4:125, 6:161, 2:135). According to the Hebrew Bible, Prophet Abraham performed circumcision, but he also was commanded to offer his son as a sacrifice, but it does not imply that Muslims have to offer their sons as a sacrifice in order to follow the religion of Abraham at all. The Qur’an only confirms the sacrifice (37:102), and that it was a trial (37:106), so he was ransomed by God (37:107), but the Qur’an does not confirm circumcision, which might suggest that it is not related to the religion of Abraham, just like sacrificing someone’s son is not the religion of Abraham either, but a test, in that period)(Nevertheless, some Muslims say that circumcision is recommended but not obligatory)(Another point is that the Hebrew Bible is not a reliable source, unless a certain matter is confirmed by the Qur’an. See the link below, “Is the Bible corrupted?”)(Allah knows best)

20:2 We (have) not sent down to you the Qur’an that you be distressed

(For new Muslims, circumcision might be a difficult and painful matter. Some Verses support that difficulty and being distressed is not intended in the Qur’an (20:2, 5:6))(Allah knows best)

5:6 O you who believe, when you stand up for the prayer, then wash your faces and your hands till the elbows and wipe your heads and your feet till the ankles. But if you are (in) a state of ceremonial impurity, then purify yourselves. But if you are ill or on a journey or anyone of you has come from the toilet or has (had) contact (with) the women and you (do) not find water, then do tayammum (with) clean earth, then wipe your faces and your hands with it. Allah (does) not intend to make any difficulty for you but He intends to purify you and complete His Favor upon you, so that you may (be) grateful. 5:7 And remember (the) Favor (of) Allah upon you and His covenant with [it] which He bound you when you said, "We heard and we obeyed;" and fear Allah. Indeed, Allah (is) All-Knower of what (is in) the breasts.
