Al-’Aziz and Potiphar: a confused nomenclature?

Al-’Aziz and Potiphar: a confused nomenclature?

12:30 And the women in the city said, "The wife of Aziz (l-’azizi) is seeking to seduce her slave boy; indeed, he has impassioned her with love. Indeed, we surely see her in clear error."

12:51 He said, "What was your affair when you sought to seduce Joseph?" They said, "Allah forbid, we do not know any evil about him." The wife of Aziz (l-’azizi) said, "Now the truth is manifest. I sought to seduce him, and indeed, he is surely of the truthful.

(“Aziz” is not a name; the root of “Aziz” is “Ayn-Zay-Zay”, and it means “mighty / potent / powerful / strong, noble / honorable, etc.”; so in this Verse is a title or rank of a ruler / governor / chief in Egypt. In this Verse, Aziz refers to the Biblical character “Potiphar”)(Allah knows best)

12:88 So when they entered upon him, they said, "O Aziz (l-’azizu), adversity has touched us and our family, and we have come with goods of little value, but pay us full measure and be charitable to us. Indeed, Allah rewards the charitable." 12:89 He said, "Do you know what you did with Joseph and his brother when you were ignorant?" 12:90 They said, "Are you indeed Joseph?" He said, "I am Joseph, and this is my brother. Indeed, Allah has been gracious to us. Indeed, he who fears Allah and is patient, then indeed, Allah does not let go waste the reward of the good-doers."

(Verse 12:88 confirms that “Aziz” is not a personal name, but a title or rank of a ruler / governor / chief, because, in this case, Joseph is called by his own brothers as “Aziz”. So, Joseph and Potiphar are two different persons with the same title or rank)(Allah knows best)

44:49 Taste, indeed, you (were) mighty (l-’azizu) (and) noble.

(These Verses confirm that “Aziz” may not be used as a name)(Allah knows best)

11:91 They said, "O Shuaib, we do not understand much of what you say, and indeed, we surely see you weak among us. And if not for your family, surely we would have stoned you, and you are not mighty (bi’azizin) against us." 11:92 He said, "O my people, is my family mightier (a’azzu) on you than Allah? And you have taken Him behind your backs. Indeed, my Lord is All-Encompassing of what you do.

27:34 She said, "Indeed, the kings, when they enter a town, they ruin it and make the most honorable (a’izzata) of its people the lowest. And thus they do.

48:3 And Allah may help you with a mighty (‘azizan) help.

41:41 Indeed, those who disbelieve in the Reminder when it comes to them. And indeed, it is surely a mighty (‘azizun) Book.
