“Greater/inner” jihad vs. “lesser/outer” jihad. Are these concepts right? Is the “greater” jihad better than the “lesser” one?
4:95 Not equal are the those among the believers who sit, except those who are disabled, and those who strive in the way of Allah with their wealth and their lives. Allah has preferred in rank those who strive with their wealth and their lives to those who sit. And to all Allah has promised the best. And Allah has preferred those who strive over those who sit, with a great reward,
(The words “greater/inner jihad” or “lesser/outer jihad” are not explicitly mentioned in the Qur’an, but the Qur’an mentions, just “jihad”, for example: “and strive” (wajahidu); “their effort” (juh’dahum); “those who strive” (l-mujahidina); “and striving” (wajihadin), etc.)(“Greater” jihad was defined as “it is the struggle against oneself” (“Jihad” means “to strive”), while “lesser” jihad was defined as “fighting against the enemies”)(The Qur’an does not mention that a so-called “greater” one is better than a so-called “lesser” one, but any struggle could be good; for example, If the so-called “greater” one is done in order to “not associating partners with God”, then the person would be or become a believer. But, once you are a believer, those who strive with their lives are greater in rank than other believers (4:95). The name “greater jihad” (aka “other than striving against the enemies”) could wrongly make people think that sitting is better than striving with their lives. And also the name “lesser jihad” (aka “striving against the enemies”) could wrongly make people think that sitting is better than striving with their lives, because “lesser” suggest a state of being lower in rank or position or lesser in importance or value, so such concepts “greater” or “lesser” jihad should not be used)(Allah knows best)
9:19 Do you make the providing of water for the pilgrims and the maintenance of Al-Masjid Al-Haraam equal to (one) who believes in Allah and the Last Day, and strives in the way of Allah? They are not equal near Allah. And Allah does not guide the wrongdoing people. 9:20 Those who believed and emigrated and strove in the way of Allah with their wealth and their lives are greater in rank near Allah. And they are the successful.
3:195 Then their Lord responded to them, "Indeed, I will not let go waste the deeds of the doer among you, whether male or female; you are of one another. So those who emigrated and were driven out from their homes, and were harmed in My way and fought and were killed - I will surely remove from them their evil deeds, and I will surely admit them to Gardens beneath which rivers flow - a reward from Allah. And Allah - with Him is the best reward."
4:74 So let those fight in the way of Allah who sell the life of the world for the Hereafter. And whoever fights in the way of Allah, then he is killed or achieves victory then soon We will grant him a great reward. 4:75 And what is with you that you do not fight in the way of Allah, and (for) those who are weak among men and women and children who say, "Our Lord, take us out of this town whose people are oppressors and appoint for us from Yourself a protector and appoint for us from Yourself a helper.
(Verse 4:95 does not say that the believers who sit are disobeying, because disobedience implies disbelief, but the believers who sit are called “believers” in Verse 4:95. So, the context is in Verse 4:75, it is about those who are weak; and they ask for a protector and a helper. Those who cannot strive are in a different rank)(Allah knows best)
3:169 And do not think of those who are killed in the way of Allah as dead. Nay, they are alive; they are given provision near their Lord.
61:10 O you who believe, shall I guide you to a transaction that will save you from a painful punishment? 61:11 Believe in Allah and His Messenger and strive in the way of Allah with your wealth and your lives. That is better for you, if you know. 61:12 He will forgive for you your sins and admit you into Gardens underneath which rivers flow and pleasant dwellings in Gardens of Eternity. That is the great success.
(Another point is that fighting is in the context of self-defense and against oppression. See the link below “Do Muslims have to kill Jews and Christians just because they are not Muslims? Or is it only allowed in self-defense?”)(Allah knows best)
9:81 Those who remained behind rejoice in their staying behind the Messenger of Allah, and they disliked to strive with their wealth and their lives in the way of Allah and they said, "Do not go forth in the heat." Say, "The Fire of Hell is more intense in heat." If they could understand.
9:88 But the Messenger and those who believed with him strove with their wealth and their lives. And those, for them are the good things, and those - they are the successful ones.
9:38 O you who believe, what (is the matter) with you when it is said to you go forth in (the) way (of) Allah, you cling heavily to the earth? Are you pleased with the life (of) the/(this) world (rather) than the Hereafter? But what (is the) enjoyment (of) the life (of) the/(this) world in (comparison to) the hereafter except a little. 9:39 If you (do) not go forth, He will punish you (with) a painful punishment, and will replace you (with) a people other than you, and you cannot harm Him (in) anything. And Allah (is) on everything All-Powerful.
33:16 Say, "[The] fleeing will never benefit you, if you flee from death or killing, and then you will not be allowed to enjoy except a little."
33:18 Verily, Allah knows those who hinder among you and those who say to their brothers, "Come to us," and they (do) not come (to) [the] battle except a few,
