Was Jacob’s name changed to Israel? Can you use both names?
10:90 And We took the Children of Israel across the sea, and Pharaoh and his soldiers followed them in rebellion and enmity until, when drowning overtook him, he said, "I believe that there is no deity except that in whom the Children of Israel believe, and I am of the Muslims."
(According to the Bible, in Genesis 32:22-32, Jacob’s name is changed to Israel. But, after that, the name “Jacob” is still used in Genesis. In regard to the Qur’an, “Israel” is used to refer to his Children (“Children of Israel”). Verse 19:58 uses the word descendants (of Israel), instead of “Children” (of Israel), but the root of “descendants” is “Thal-Ra-Ra”, and it also means “Children”, so that Verse is not an exception. On the other hand, Verse 3:93 says, “what Israel made unlawful to himself”, but one interpretation is that the Verse doesn’t refer to Israel / Jacob, but refers to “Children of Israel” (what Children of Israel made unlawful to themselves), so it is shortened as “Israel”, because “Children of Israel” had been previously mentioned in the same sentence. The next Verse (3:94) confirms that “Israel” refers to “Children of Israel”, because it says, “whoever fabricates a lie about Allah after that”, so Israel / Jacob did not fabricate a lie, but Children of Israel did, in regard to making unlawful the food that was lawful. The conclusion is that “Israel” is only used in the Qur’an in regard to Children of Israel, while “Jacob” is used in regard to the person / individual. The words “Bani Israel” (Children of Israel) establish lineage in the Qur’an, not religion, while “Jew” refers to religion. Notice that “Israel” also refer to his children, from later periods, because “Children of Israel” is in use at the time of, for example, Moses, Jesus and Muhammad (7:134, 61:6, 2:40))(“Jacob” is mentioned in regard to being bestowed to Abraham, this indicates that “Jacob” was his first name (19:49, 21:72, 6:84, 11:71))(Allah knows best)
3:93 All food was lawful for the Children of Israel except what Israel made unlawful to himself before the Torah was revealed. Say, "So bring the Torah and recite it, if you are truthful." 3:94 Then whoever fabricates a lie about Allah after that, then those are the wrongdoers.
19:6 Who will inherit me and inherit from the family of Jacob. And my Lord, make him pleasing." 19:7 "O Zechariah, indeed, We give you glad tidings of a boy whose name (will be) John (Yahya), We (have) not assigned (this) name for it before."
(The name “Jacob” was not replaced but was still in use (e.g. it is used by Zechariah, at the time of Jesus))(Allah knows best)
19:49 So when he left them and what they worshiped other than Allah, We bestowed him Isaac and Jacob, and each We made a Prophet.
21:72 And We bestowed on him Isaac and Jacob in addition, and all We made righteous.
6:84 And We bestowed to him Isaac and Jacob, all We guided. And Noah, We guided before; and of his descendants, David and Solomon and Job and Joseph and Moses and Aaron. And thus We reward the good-doers.
11:71 And his wife was standing and she laughed. Then We gave her glad tidings of Isaac, and after Isaac, Jacob.
2:140 Or do you say that Abraham and Ishmael and Isaac and Jacob and the descendants were Jews or Christians?" Say, "Are you more knowing or is Allah?" And who is more unjust than one who conceals a testimony he has from Allah? And Allah is not unaware of what you do. 17:4 And We decreed for the Children of Israel in the Book, "You will surely cause corruption on the earth twice, and you will surely reach great haughtiness."
(In regard to religion, Jacob was not a Jew, but a Muslim (“Muslim” is an Arabic word meaning “one who submits (to God)”)(Verse 17:4 says about the Children of Israel, “you will surely cause corruption on the earth twice, and you will surely reach great haughtiness”)(By mentioning “Israel” instead of “Jacob”, it might be a way to disassociate Jacob’s name from his descendants’ wrongdoing (e.g. “Children of Israel” took the calf at the time of Moses (4:153); a group of “Children of Israel” disbelieved in Jesus, etc.))(Note: the root of Israel is “Alif-Siin-Ra” in Arabic, which means “to make captive, prisoner, joint / ligament / frame / vigour / energy”. The text of Genesis etymologizes the name with the root sarah “to rule, contend, have power, prevail over”. The Arabic and Hebrew root use different words, yet somewhat similar meaning (e.g. “energy vs. have power”)(Allah knows best)
2:133 Or were you witnesses when death came to Jacob, when he said to his sons, "What will you worship after me?" They said, "We will worship your God and the God of your fathers, Abraham and Ishmael and Isaac – One God. And we are Muslims/submissive to Him."
61:6 And when Jesus, the son of Mary, said, "O children of Israel, indeed I am the Messenger of Allah to you confirming what came before me of the Torah and bringing good tidings of a Messenger to come after me, whose name is Ahmad." But when he came to them with clear evidences, they said, "This is obvious magic."
2:40 O Children of Israel, remember My Favor which I bestowed upon you, and fulfill My Covenant, I will fulfill your covenant, and fear Me and Me alone. 2:41 And believe in what I have sent down confirming that which is with you, and be not the first disbeliever of it. And do not exchange My Signs for a small price, and fear Me (and Me) Alone.
7:134 And when the punishment fell on them, they said, "O Moses, invoke your Lord for us by what He has promised you. If you remove the punishment from us, we will surely believe you and we will surely send with you the Children of Israel."
19:58 Those were the ones upon whom Allah bestowed favor from among the Prophets of the descendants of Adam and of those We carried with Noah, and of the descendants of Abraham and Israel, and of those whom We guided and chose. When the verses of the Most Merciful were recited to them, they fell in prostration and weeping.
