How
to fast? Verses of the Qur’an about fasting
2:183
O you who believe, fasting is prescribed to
you as it was prescribed to those before you, so that
you may become righteous. 2:184 Days numbered. So
whoever among you is sick or on a journey, then a
prescribed number of days, other (ukhara). And
upon those who can afford it, a ransom of feeding a
poor. And whoever volunteers good then it is better for him. And
if you fast, it is better for you, if you know. 2:185 The month of
Ramadhan is that in which was revealed the Qur'an, a guidance for
mankind and clear proofs of guidance and criterion. So whoever
witnesses among you the month, then he should fast in it; and whoever
is ill or on a journey – then the prescribed number
of other days. Allah intends for you ease and does not intend for
you hardship and that you complete the period and to magnify Allah
for that [to] which He has guided you; and that you may be grateful.
(The
root of “ukhara” (other) is “Alif-Kha-Ra”, and it means “hold
back / delay / postpone / defer, last/back part of a thing; Aakhiru:
after; Akhkharat: she puts behind, etc.”. So, the definition may
suggest that if you did not fast in the month of Ramadhan, you might
fast the days right after the months of Ramadhan in which you are not
sick or on a journey)(In regard to fasting in the Poles, see the link
below “How can you fast in the poles if sunrise to sunset takes
months? Also how do you pray if there is a sunrise and sunset that
takes 6 months?”)(Allah knows best)
2:187
It is permitted for you in the nights of fasting to
approach to your wives. They are your garments and you are their
garments. Allah Knows that you used to deceive yourselves, so He
turned towards you and He forgave you. So now have relations with
them and seek what Allah has ordained for you. And eat and drink
until the white thread becomes distinct to you from the
black thread of dawn. Then complete the fast till the
night. And do not have relations with them while you are secluded
in the masajid. These are the limits (set by) Allah, so do not
approach them. Thus Allah makes clear His verses for the people, so
that they may become righteous.
33:5
Call them by their fathers; it is more just near Allah. But if you do
not know their fathers - then they are your brothers in religion and
your friends. But there is no blame
upon you if you made a mistake therein,
but what your hearts intended. And Allah is
Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
(It
is also interpreted that if you, for example, take a shower, or go to
the dentist, and water runs through the throat, and your intention is
not drinking it, it might not break the fast, because you are not
doing the act of drinking, but the water might pass or fall inside
against your will)(Allah knows best)
4:92
And it is not for a believer that he kills a believer except by
mistake. And whoever killed a believer by mistake, then freeing of a
believing slave and blood money (is to be) paid to his family unless
that they remit (it as) charity. But if (he) was from a people
hostile to you and he was a believer, then freeing of a believing
slave. And if (he) was from a people (with whom) is a treaty between
you and between them, then the blood money is to be paid to his
family, and freeing of a believing slave. And whoever does not
find, then fasting for two months consecutively, (seeking)
repentance from Allah, and Allah is All-Knowing, All-Wise.
(The
context is other than fasting in Ramadhan, but the Verse confirms
that someone can fast the next month, if he could not fast in
Ramadhan)(Allah knows best)
2:196
And complete the Hajj and Umrah for Allah . But if you are prevented,
then what can be obtained with ease of sacrificial animals. And do
not shave your heads until the sacrificial animal has reached its
place of slaughter. And whoever among you is ill or has an ailment of
the head then a ransom of fasting or charity or sacrifice. And
when you are secure, then whoever performs Umrah followed by Hajj,
then what can be obtained with ease of sacrificial animals. And
whoever cannot find - then a fast of three days during Hajj and of
seven when you have returned. Those are ten complete. This is for
those whose family is not present in al-Masjid al-haram. And fear
Allah and know that Allah is severe in penalty.
5:95
O you who believe, do not kill the game while you are in Ihram. And
whoever of you killed it intentionally, then the penalty is similar
to what he killed of the cattle, judging it by two just men among you
as an offering reaching the Kabah or an expiation - feeding needy
people or the equivalent of that in fasting, that
he may taste the consequence of his deed. Allah pardoned what (has)
passed, but whoever returned, then Allah will take retribution from
him. And Allah is All-Mighty, Owner of Retribution.
5:89
Allah will not call you to account for the thoughtless utterances in
your oaths but He will call you to account for what you contracted of
the oath. So its expiation is the feeding of ten
needy people from the average of what you feed your
families or clothing them or freeing a slave. But whoever does not
find (that), then fasting for three days. That is the
expiation of your oaths when you have sworn. And guard your oaths.
Thus Allah makes clear to you His Verses so that you may be grateful.
33:35
Indeed, the Muslim men and the Muslim women, and the believing men
and the believing women, and the obedient men and the obedient women,
and the truthful men and the truthful women, and the patient men and
the patient women, and the humble men and the humble women, and the
men who give charity and the women who give charity, and the men
who fast and the women who fast, and the men who guard their
chastity and the women who guard (it), and the men who remember Allah
much and the women who remember - Allah has prepared for them
forgiveness and a great reward.
(Both,
men and women, have to fast)(Allah knows best)
66:5
Perhaps his Lord, if he divorced you, He will substitute for him
wives better than you - submissive, faithful, obedient,
repentant, who worship, who fast, previously married and
virgins.
58:3
And those who pronounce zihar to their wives, then go back on what
they said, then freeing of a slave before they touch each
other. That you are admonished thereby. And Allah is All-Aware of
what you do. 58:4 Then whoever (does) not find, then
fasting (for) two months consecutively before they both
touch each other. But (he) who not is able, then (the)
feeding (of) sixty needy one(s). That - so that you may
believe in Allah and His Messenger, and these (are the) limits (of)
Allah, and for the disbelievers (is) a painful punishment.
