What will be the food in Hell?
88:6 They will have no food (ta’amun) except from a bitter thorny plant (dari’in), 88:7 It does not nourish nor avails from hunger.
(The root word of “a bitter thorny plant” (dari’in) is “Dad-Ra-Ain”, and it means “to humiliate, humble, lower one’s self, humility / submissiveness. Dry, bitter, thorny herbage”. So, that word refers to a “plant”, and also refers to its negative effects)(Allah knows best)
69:36 And nor any food (ta’amun) except the discharge of wounds (ghis’linin),
(One interpretation is that the food would cause a discharge of wounds, and the same food would come from a bitter thorny plant (considering this translation of the Verse), so, Verses 88:6 and 69:36 are not mutually exclusive, but they could refer to the same food)(Another interpretation is that, if there are different foods, then the Verses could refer to the (same) bad effects, not the plant (considering the translations other than “plant”). All foods in Hell would have bad effects, so there is no food except causing those bad effects: none of them would nourish, and all of them would cause wounds, and all of them would cause the feeling of weakness and need (“dari’in”), so there is no contradiction)(The root of “ghis’linin” (discharge of wounds) is “Gh-Siin-Lam” and it means “a certain plant growing in places that exude water and produce salt, spring, etc.”)(Allah knows best)
37:62 Is that better (as) hospitality or (the) tree (shajaratu) (of) Zaqqum? 37:63 Indeed, We have made it a trial for the wrongdoers. 37:64 Indeed, it is a tree (shajaratun) that grows in the bottom of the Hellfire, 37:65 Its emerging fruit is as if it was heads of the devils. 37:66 And indeed, they (will) surely eat from it and fill (their) bellies with it. 37:67 Then indeed, for them/(they will have) a mixture of boiling water [in it].
(The root of “shajaratun“ (tree) is “Shiin-Jiim-Ra”, and it means “tree, plant having a trunk or stem, etc.”, then, according to this definition, Verse 37:63 could also refer to a plant, like in Verse 88:6, so there is no contradiction. One interpretation is that Verse 37:63 refers to the same food, or same effects, mentioned in Verses 88:6 and 69:36, because bad effects are common in all foods in Hell. Whether the Verses speak about the same plant or different plants. If one plant, for example, does not nourish, it is not expected that other plants would nourish in Hell, so there is no contradiction)(Verses 88:6 and 69:36 do not mention the plant or tree by name, but Verse 37:62 says, “(the) tree (of) Zaqqum”, so it could also be interpreted that it refers to different plants)(Allah knows best)
44:43 Indeed, the tree of Zaqqum 44:44 (Will be) food of the sinners. 44:45 Like murky oil, it will boil in the bellies, 44:46 Like boiling of scalding water.
(The food boiling in the bellies can cause the discharging of wounds, mentioned in Verse 69:36)(Allah knows best)
56:52 Will surely eat from the tree of Zaqqum. 56:53 Then will fill with it the bellies, 56:54 And drink over it scalding water,
(The root of “Zaqqum” is “Zay-Qaf-Miim”, and it means, “gobbling, eating it quickly, to swallow, plague / pestilence, any deadly food, food of people of the fire (of Hell), a certain tree in Hell, a certain tree having small leaves stinking and bitter, dust-coloured tree having a pungent odour”)(According to the definition of Zaqqum, it is a bitter tree. Verse 88:6 speaks about a bitter plant too, so it might refer to the same plant/tree)(Allah knows best)
15:43 And indeed, Hell (is) surely the promised place for all (of) them. 15:44 For it (are) seven gates, for each gate (is) an assigned portion (juz’on) among them.
(Hell has seven gates; for each gate is an assigned portion among those who go to Hell (15:43-44). The root of “juz’on” (a portion) is “Jiim-Zay-Alif”, and it means “part of a whole”. The meaning suggests that they have a part of an entire thing, rather than different things)(Allah knows best)
