Exposing those who misquote and mistranslate verses of the Qur’an / Some frequently misquoted verses of the Qur’an
2:191 And kill them wherever you find them, and drive them out from wherever they drove you out, and oppression is worse than killing. And do not fight them near Al-Masjid Al-Haraam until they fight you there. Then if they fight you, then kill them. Such is the reward of the disbelievers.
(Verse 2:191 is frequently misquoted by disbelievers. They only quote “kill them wherever you find them”, but the context of the Verse is oppression. The Verse explicitly says “oppression is worse than killing”, so Muslims were oppressed by the disbelievers, and the context is also about self-defense: “if they fight you, then kill them”(2:191) and “drive them out from wherever they drove you out”(2:191))(Allah knows best)
2:190 And fight in the way of Allah those who fight you, and do not transgress. Indeed, Allah does not like the transgressors.
(When they quote Verse 2:191, they also ignore the previous Verse 2:190: “fight in the way of Allah those who fight you, and do not transgress. Indeed, Allah does not like the transgressors”. So, it confirms that the context is self-defense)(They also ignore Verse 2:194: “whoever transgressed against you, then you transgress against him in the same manner as he transgressed against you”)(Allah knows best)
2:194 The sacred month is for the sacred month, and for violations there is legal retribution. Then whoever transgressed against you, then you transgress against him in the same manner as he transgressed against you. And fear Allah and know that Allah is with those who fear.
3:85 And whoever seeks other than Islam as religion - then never will it be accepted from him, and he, in the Hereafter, will be from the losers.
(Verse 3:85 is also misquoted. The word “Islam” is used in the English language, but it is an Arabic word, and it means “submission (to God)”. That’s the religion preached by all Messengers. For example, according to Luke 22:42, Jesus said “yet not my will, but yours be done”)(E.g., a religion that denies the Commands of God would not be accepted)(Allah knows best)
5:33 Only the recompense for those who wage war (against) Allah and His Messenger and strive in the earth spreading corruption is that they be killed or they be crucified or their hands and their feet of opposite sides be cut off or they be exiled from the land. That is for them disgrace in the world, and for them in the Hereafter is a great punishment. 5:34 Except those who repent before you overpower them, then know that Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
(Some non-Muslims use a mistranslation of Verse 5:33: “main and crucify the infidels if they criticize Islam”, while the Verse says “for those who wage war”, so the response is “that they be killed or crucified, etc.”. So, the Verse is about self-defense)(If the disbelievers criticize Islam, then, Verse 28:55 says, “And when they hear vain talk, they turn away from it and say, "For us are our deeds and for you are your deeds. Peace be on you; we do not seek the ignorant.", or verse 4:140: “… when you hear the Verses of Allah being rejected and ridiculed, then do not sit with them until they engage in a conversation other than that ...”)(Allah knows best)
8:12 When your Lord inspired to the Angels, "I am with you, so strengthen those who believed. I will cast terror in the hearts of those who disbelieved, so strike above the necks and strike from them every fingertip."
(Some non-Muslims use a mistranslation of Verse 8:12 “terrorize and behead those who believe in scriptures other than the Qur’an”, while the Verse says “when your Lord inspired to the Angels, “I will cast terror in the hearts of those who disbelieved, so strike above the necks and strike from them every fingertip””. The Verse is about God inspiring to the Angels, in order to “strengthen those who believed”. Previously the believers were seeking help from God. God reinforced them with a thousand Angels (8:9), so the context is war, and war is in self-defense)(And the mistranslator/s invented that the Verse says “those who believe in scriptures other than the Qur’an”, while the Verse doesn’t say so at all, but the Qur’an says that God revealed the Torah and the Gospel (3:3), so Muslims also believe in those previous revelations. Another point is that there is freedom of religion in Islam: 2:256 “There is no compulsion in the religion”, 109:6 “For you is your religion, and for me is my religion", 17:107 “Believe in it or do not believe”; 42:15 “For us are our deeds and for you your deeds. There is no argument between us and between you”; 28:55 “For us are our deeds and for you are your deeds. Peace be on you; we do not seek the ignorant”; 39:15 “worship what you will besides Him”, 50:45 “you are not the one to compel them”; 33:28 "If you desire the life of the world and its adornment, then come, I will provide for you and release you with a good release”; 18:29 “whoever wills - let him believe and whoever wills - let him disbelieve”, etc.)(Allah knows best)
8:9 When you were seeking help of your Lord, and He answered you, "Indeed, I am going to reinforce you with a thousand Angels, one after another."
8:60 And prepare for them whatever you are able to of force and cavalry to terrify therewith the enemy of Allah, and your enemy and others besides them, whom you do not know, (but) Allah knows them. And whatever you spend in the way of Allah, it will be fully repaid to you, and you (will) not be wronged.
(Some non-Muslims use Verse 8:60 out of context. The previous Verses (8:56-57) speak about a covenant made with them, and they broke the covenant. The word “war” is mentioned in Verse 8:57, so it is in the context of war. And the next Verse (8:61) says “if they incline to peace, then you incline to it”. So, it is also in the context of self-defense. Muslims react according to what the enemy is doing against them)(Allah knows best)
8:56 Those who - you made a covenant with them, then they break their covenant every time, and they do not fear. 8:57 So if you gain dominance over them in war, disperse by them those who are behind them, so that they may take heed.
8:61 And if they incline to peace, then you incline to it, and put trust in Allah. Indeed, He is All-Hearer, All-Knower.
8:65 O Prophet, urge the believers to fight. If there are twenty among you steadfast, they will overcome two hundred. And if there are one hundred among you, they will overcome one thousand of those who disbelieve, because they are a people who do not understand.
(This Verse is also misquoted by disbelievers. Verse 8:65 has the same context than Verse 8:60 (See the comment above). Some non-Muslims also use a mistranslation of Verse 8:65 in which the unbelievers are insulted, but there is no any insult in the Verses. On the contrary, the Qur’an says in Verse 6:108 “And do not insult those whom they invoke other than Allah, lest they insult Allah in enmity without knowledge. Thus We have made fair-seeming to every community their deed. Then to their Lord is their return, then He will inform them about what they used to do”)(Allah knows best)
9:5 Then, when the sacred months have passed, then kill the polytheists wherever you find them and seize them and besiege them and sit (in wait) for them at every place of ambush. But if they repent and establish prayer and give the zakah (charity), then leave their way. Indeed, Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
(Some non-Muslims use a mistranslation of Verse 9:5: “when opportunity arises, kill the infidels wherever you catch them”, while Verse 9:5 says “when the sacred months have passed, then kill the polytheists wherever you find them”)(Chapter 9 is in the context of self-defense. The next Verse (9:6) speaks about if anyone of the polytheists seek protection, then grant him protection. And they are to be escorted to his place of safety. So, if the enemies’ intention is other than fighting (e.g. seeking your protection), then they are not killed, nor they are killed “when opportunity arises” (mistranslation). They do not respect the kinship or covenant of protection”, “and it is they who are the transgressors” (9:10); according to Verse 9:12, the purpose of fighting is that “they may cease”, so the context is self-defense; according to 9:13, they began to attack the first time (self-defense); according to Verse 9:40 “those who disbelieved drove him out”, etc.)(Some non-Muslims call Verse 9:5 “the verse of the sword”, but the Qur’an does not support such a name, and the word “sword” is not mentioned in the entire Qur’an. On the other hand, the word “sword” is mentioned more than 400 times in the Bible)(They also say that it abrogates “peaceful” chapters, but there is no abrogation, nor contradiction, in the Qur’an)(See the articles below: “Are there any abrogated verses in the Qur'an?” and “Is there any contradiction in the Qur'an?”)(Allah knows best)
9:28 O you who believe, indeed, the polytheists are unclean (najasun), so let them not come near Al-Masjid Al-Haraam after this, their year. And if you fear poverty, then soon Allah will enrich you from His Bounty, if He wills. Indeed, Allah is All-Knower, All-Wise.
(Some non-Muslims use a mistranslation and they misquote Verse 9:28: “the infidels are unclean; do not let them into a mosque”, while it says “the polytheists are unclean, so let them not come near Al-Masjid Al-Haraam”)(Verse 9:28 is interpreted as “purification” in regard to someone’s belief. In that sense, God purifies whom He wills (e.g. He guides whom He wills (39:23)); and people purify themselves by obeying God (33:33))(The root of “najasun” (unclean) is “Nun-Jiim-Siin”, and it means “to be unclean, impure / filthy / dirty. It is of two kinds: one that can be seen by sight, the other that can be perceived by intelligence”, so according to the root dictionary, “unclean” is not necessarily physical, but also, for example, about their reasoning)(This interpretation is confirmed by Verse 4:49, “do you not see those who claim purity for themselves? Nay, Allah, He purifies whom He wills”; so this Verse may imply that it is not physical, because anyone can clean their own body, but in Verse 4:49, God purifies you. The previous Verse (4:48) mentions those who associate partners with God (4:48), so the context is about their disbelief)(Another point is that Verse 9:28 specifies “Al-Masjid Al-Haraam”, not “any mosque”)(Some Verses, other than Verse 9:28, seem to refer to a physical purification: “He produced you from the earth and when you were fetuses in your mothers’ wombs. So do not ascribe purity to yourselves” (53:32); progeny is made from an extract of water despised (32:8))(Allah knows best)
9:29 Fight those who do not believe in Allah and in the Last Day, and they do not make unlawful what Allah has made unlawful and His Messenger, and they do not acknowledge the religion of the truth, from those who were given the Scripture, until they pay the jizyah willingly, while they are subdued.
(Verse 9:29 indicates who are the ones to be fought, in a context of war. They are disbelievers. In regard to paying the jizyah, the Verse says that the payment is to be done willingly. It is said that the payment is in exchange of security. On the other hand, Muslims do not pay willingly in non-Muslim countries but they are forced to pay taxes, whether Muslims agree on it or not, so some non-Muslims are hypocrites by using Verse 9:29 against Islam)(Another point is that there is no compulsion in religion in Verse 9:29; and the context of Chapter 9 is self-defense (9:8-10, 9:12-13, 9:40, 9:61, 9:64-66, 9:107))(Allah knows best)
9:30 And the Jews said, "Uzair is son of Allah." And the Christians said, "Messiah is son of Allah." That is their saying with their mouths, they imitate the saying of those who disbelieved before. (May) Allah destroy them. How deluded are they.
(Some non-Muslims use a mistranslation of Verse 9:30: “the Jews and the Christians are perverts; fight them”, while Verse 9:30 does not speak about fighting them, nor call them “perverts”. They are not fought because they just said something “with their mouths”, without fighting Muslims, so they are not to be fought. Verse 16:126 says “retaliate with the like of that with which you were afflicted”)(Allah knows best)
9:123 O you who believe, fight the disbelievers who are close to you, and let them find harshness in you. And know that Allah is with those who fear.
(Some non-Muslims use a mistranslation and misquote Verse 9:123: “make war on the infidels living in your neighborhood”. The Verse does not say “make war” which also means or implies to “begin a war”, but the context of Chapter 9 is self-defense (9:8-10, 9:12-13, 9:40, 9:61, 9:64-66, 9:107))(Allah knows best)
22:19 These two opponents dispute concerning their Lord. But those who disbelieved will be cut out for them garments of fire. Scalding water will be poured over their heads.
(Some non-Muslims use a mistranslation of Verse 22:19: “punish the unbelievers with garments of fire, hooked iron rods, boiling water; melt their skin and bellies”, while the Verse says “those who disbelieved will be cut out for them garments of fire. Scalding water will be poured over their heads”. The Verse is a prediction of a future event, in Hell (44:43-50))(Allah knows best)
44:43 Indeed, the tree of Zaqqum 44:44 (Will be) food of the sinners. 44:45 Like murky oil, it will boil in the bellies, 44:46 Like boiling of scalding water. 44:47 "Seize him and drag him into the midst of the Hellfire, 44:48 Then pour over his head the punishment of the scalding water. 44:49 Taste, indeed, you (were) mighty (and) noble. 44:50 Indeed, this is what you used to doubt."
47:4 So when you meet those who disbelieve, then strike the necks until, when you have subdued them, then bind the bond firmly, then afterwards either a favor (mannan) or ransom, until the war lays down its burdens. That. And if Allah had willed, surely, He could have taken retribution from them, but to test some of you with others. And those who are killed in the way of Allah, then He will never cause their deeds to be lost.
(Some non-Muslims use a mistranslation of Verse 47:4: “do not long for peace with the infidels; behead them when you catch them”, while it says “when you meet those who disbelieve, then strike the necks until, when you have subdued them,...”)(Verse 47:4 says “until the war lays down its burdens”, so it is in the context of war, because the word “war” is explicitly mentioned. And when they are subdued, there are not killed or beheaded, but, Verse 47:4 says, “bind the bond firmly, then afterwards either a favor or ransom”. So they are kept alive)(It is interpreted that “a favor” in Verse 47:4 refers to “set them free”. This interpretation may be supported by the meaning of the root word “Miim-Nun-Nun” (favor): it means in concrete when the rope looses it’s resistance or becomes broken. This interpretation may also be supported by Verse 38:39: Verse 38:39 uses the word “um’nun / grant”, which has the same root (“Miim-Nun-Nun”) than “mannan / favor” (47:4). According to the context of Verse 38:39, “um’nun / grant” is the opposite of “withhold / keep / retain”. So, “favor / grant” in both Verses may imply “set them free” or “not retaining”)(Allah knows best)
38:39 "This is Our gift, so grant (fa-um’nun) or withhold without account."
3:28 (Let) not the believers take the disbelievers as allies (awliyaa) instead of the believers. And whoever does that, then he (has) not from Allah in anything except that you fear from them, (as) a precaution. And Allah warns you (of) Himself, and to Allah is the final return.
(One interpretation is that Verse 3:28 is complemented by Verse 60:9 “Allah only forbids you from those who fight you in the religion and drive you out of your homes and support in your expulsion, that you make them allies (tawallawhum). And whoever makes them allies (yatawallahum), then those are the wrongdoers.”. And Verse 4:140 says “when you hear the Verses of Allah being rejected and ridiculed, then do not sit with them until they engage in a conversation other than that”. So there is no objection on sitting with them (4:140), unless they reject and ridicule the Verses of Allah; and you are only forbidden from making them allies if they fight you and drive you out of your homes and support in your expulsion (60:9). The Verses of the Qur’an are not mutually exclusive but complement each other)(The root of the word “awliyaa” (allies) is “Waw-Lam-Ya”, and it means “to be close, near, follow, be up to, direction of following; walli – direct; walii – protecting benefactor, helper, ally, successor, heir, guardian; etc.”)(Allah knows best)
60:9 Allah only forbids you from those who fight you in the religion and drive you out of your homes and support in your expulsion, that you make them allies. And whoever makes them allies, then those are the wrongdoers.
4:140 And surely He has revealed to you in the Book that when you hear the Verses of Allah being rejected and ridiculed, then do not sit with them until they engage in a conversation other than that. Indeed, you then, (would be) like them. Indeed, Allah will gather the hypocrites and disbelievers in Hell all together.
5:57 O you who believe, do not take allies those who take your religion in ridicule and fun among those who are given the Book before you and the disbelievers. And fear Allah, if you are believers.
31:15 But if they strive against you that you associate partners with Me of what you have no any knowledge, then do not obey both of them. But accompany (wasahib’huma) them with kindness in the world, and follow the path (of him) who turns to Me. Then towards Me is your return, then I will inform you of what you used to do"
(It is okay to accompany your disbelieving parents with kindness in the world (31:15). The root of “sahib” is “Sad-Ha-Ba”, and it means “to company, be the friend of or companion to, etc.”, while the word “protector / ally” could be used in the context of fighting (48:22, 60:9)(E.g. Chapter 9 is in a context of fighting (9:8-29), so it is forbidden to take them as allies))(Allah knows best)
60:8 Allah does not forbid you from those who do not fight you in the religion and do not drive you out of your homes, that you deal kindly and justly with them. Indeed, Allah loves those who act justly.
39:28 A Qur’an in Arabic, without any crookedness, so that they may become righteous.
(The Qur’an is in Arabic language. Those mistranslations in English are not the Qur’an)(Allah knows best)
3:119 Lo, you are those who love them, but they do not love you and you believe in the Book - all of it. And when they meet you, they say, "We believe." And when they are alone they bite the fingers tips at you in rage. Say, Die in your rage. Indeed. Allah is All-Knowing of what is in the breasts."
(Muslims believe in the Qur’an, all of it. The Qur’an should be interpreted as a whole, instead of misquoting it)(Allah knows best)
2:85 Then you are those who kill yourselves and evict a party of you from their homes, you support one another against them in sin and transgression. And if they come to you as captives, you ransom; while their eviction was forbidden to you. So do you believe in part of the Book and disbelieve in part? Then what should be the recompense for those who do so among you, except disgrace in worldly life; and on the Day of Resurrection they will be sent back to the most severe punishment? And Allah is not unaware of what you do.
42:7 And thus We have revealed to you an Arabic Qur’an that you may warn the Mother of Cities, and those around it, and warn of the Day of Assembly, (there is) no doubt in it. A party will be in Paradise and a party in the Blazing Fire.
(Disbelievers want you to think that the so-called extremism or radicalism comes from the Qur’an, while the Qur’an guides to righteousness (17:9). Self-defense is not the source / origin / root of violence, and there is nothing bad or evil in the Qur’an)(In fact, the Bible is the extreme one. The world should be concerned that the Bible contains cannibalism, killing of innocents, rape, incest, oppression of women, slavery, sexual slaves, honor killing, stoning, discrimination against disabled people, etc.; while all these are not supported in the Qur’an. See the link below “Which religion is moderate and which is extreme? Who are the radicals? Judaism vs. Christianity vs. Islam vs. atheism”)(Allah knows best)
3:99 Say, "O People of the Book, why do you hinder those who believe from the way of Allah, seeking to make it (seem) crooked, while you are witnesses? And Allah is not unaware of what you do.
(The paradox is that the purpose of those who misquote and mistranslate the Qur’an, is that they want people to think that Islam is a threat, so they are implicitly inciting to violence against Muslims, and/or oppressing Muslim minorities in their countries, or trying to ban the Qur’an, etc.; while some non-Muslims are the murderer ones, and a threat to the people, even against their own people; and the paradox is that the Bible is the source of radical violence)(Allah knows best)
