Seven heavens and seven earths? How many planets in the solar system according to the Qur’an?
65:12 Allah is He Who created seven heavens, and of the earth, the like of them. The command descends between them that you may know that Allah is All-Powerful over everything. And that Allah, indeed, encompasses all things in knowledge.
(Verse 65:12 does not say that there are only seven planets in the solar system, but the number of earths is not mentioned. An interpretation of Verse 65:12 is that “earth” means “matter”. That matter is the like of the heavens in size, because the heavens contain matter. This interpretation is supported by Verse 57:21, “a Garden whose width is like the width of the heaven and the earth” (so heaven and earth are mentioned as one size, which is also like the “Garden” (Paradise)). There is matter all over the universe (space). As much as 90 percent of the matter in the universe is invisible)(“The like of them” is feminine plural, so it refers to seven heavens, also feminine plural)(Another (less likely) interpretation is that there are seven earths like planet earth, because, if “that created of the earth” is created likewise in seven heavens (65:12), then, it might imply that there are seven earths, like planet earth)(Allah knows best)
13:15 And to Allah prostrates whoever is in the heavens and the earth, willingly or unwillingly, and so do their shadows in the mornings and in the afternoons.
(This Verse is interpreted as life in other planets)(Allah knows best)
3:29 Say, "Whether you conceal what (is) in your breasts or you disclose it - Allah knows it. And He knows what (is) in the heavens and what (is) in the earth. And Allah (is) on everything All-Powerful."
(The word “earth” is a generic noun, it refers to all the matter that the heavens contain (e.g., planets, satellites, etc.))(Allah knows best)
42:29 And among His Signs is the creation of the heavens and the earth and whatever creatures He has dispersed in both of them. And He is All-Powerful over their gathering, when He wills.
17:44 The seven heavens and the earth and whatever is in them glorify Him. And there is not a thing except glorifies His Praise, but you do not understand their glorification. Indeed, He is Ever-Forbearing, Oft-Forgiving."
16:48 Have they not seen what Allah has created from a thing? Their shadows incline to the right and to the left, prostrating to Allah, while they are humble? 16:49 And to Allah prostrate whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth of creatures, and the Angels, and they are not arrogant.
41:12 Then He completed them as seven heavens in two periods and He revealed in each heaven its affair. And We adorned the nearest heaven with lamps and to guard. That is the Decree of the All-Mighty, the All-Knower.
(In regard to the “nearest heaven”, all the stars we see belong to the Milky Way galaxy. If we consider the combined light of many billions of stars, then we can see stars from other galaxies too, but still the nearest heaven is adorned with lamps. So one interpretation is that the Milky Way galaxy could be the nearest heaven)(Another interpretation is that the nearest heaven is not only the Milky Way galaxy but it is also other stars and galaxies that have been detected in the sky. If so, the multiple heavens (universes) would lie outside and beyond these galaxies)(Allah knows best)
12:4 When Joseph said to his father, "O my father, indeed I have seen eleven stars (kawkaban) and the sun and the moon; I saw them prostrating to me." … 12:100 And he raised his parents upon the throne, and they fell down to him prostrate. And he said, "O my father, this is the interpretation of my dream of before. Verily, my Lord has made it true. And indeed, He was good to me when He took me out of the prison, and brought you from the bedouin life after Satan had caused discord between my brothers and me. Indeed, my Lord is Most Subtle to what He wills. Indeed, He is the All-Knower, the All-Wise.
(11 stars/planets in Verse 12:4 are interpreted as Joseph’s 11 brothers, and the sun and the moon are interpreted as his parents (12:100). Despite Verse 12:4 is explained by Verse 12:100, some people interpret it as 11 planets in the solar system. According to the article “Solar System” in wikipedia, the known planets are 8 (Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune), and the known dwarf planets are 3 (Ceres, Pluto and Eris), so there are 11 planets, but there are two more objects still to be proved as dwarf planets (Haumea and Makemake). So, the conclusion is that the Qur’an is in accordance with science, because Verse 12:4 is explained by Verse 12:100, regardless of the number of objects or planets that are in the solar system)(Note: the root of “kawkaban” (stars) is “Kaf-Waw-Kaf-Ba (Kaf-Alif-Kaf-Ba)”, and it means “to shine, glisten”. So, “kawkaban” can also be interpreted as “planets”, because all planets shine)(Allah knows best)

Salam,
ReplyDeleteThere is a similarity mentioned between the earth and the skies. The similarity is in their structure i.e as skies are built i.e one above another, similarly earth is made of layers one above another. The details of the layers of the Earth are given in the link to the post below.

Does Earth has seven atmospheric layers?
