Are there any abrogated verses in the Qur'an?
16:101 And when We substitute a Verse in place of a Verse, and Allah is most knowing of what He sends down they say, "You are only an inventor." Nay, most of them do not know.
(“A Verse in place of a Verse” is done within the same “Scripture”, then the previous verse is not included in the “Scripture” anymore. So, there are no two verses included at the same time in the Qur’an by which one is abrogating the other)(For example, the Qur’an does not command two direction of prayer at the same time, in two different verses, but informs that the direction of prayer which he was used to was made to make evident who follows the Messenger (2:143-146). The “new” direction is in fact the “oldest” one (3:96))(Allah knows best)
2:106 What We abolish of a sign or cause it to be forgotten, We bring better than it or similar to it. Do you not know that Allah is All-Powerful over everything?
(There are no “forgotten” or abrogated verses included in the Qur’an. If there were abrogated verses in the Qur’an, then there would be internal contradictions, but there isn’t. And if there were forgotten verses in the Qur’an, then they would not be called “forgotten”, because the Qur’an is a reminder. So, that information is not included anymore, or was never included in the Qur’an, if it were to refer to a previous scripture)(Allah knows best)
38:1 Saad. By the Qur’an full of reminder.
40:81 And He shows you His Signs/Verses. Then which of the Signs/Verses of Allah will you deny?
6:115 And the word of your Lord has been fulfilled (watammat) in truth and justice. None can change His words, and He is the All-Hearer, the All-Knower.
18:27 And recite what has been revealed to you of the Book of your Lord. None can change His Words, and never will you find a refuge besides Him. … 50:4 Certainly, We know what the earth diminishes of them, and with Us (is) a guarded Book.
(There is no contradiction between Verses 6:115 and 18:27, because, according to the context, Verse 6:115 says that the word has been “completed / perfected / fulfilled”, on the other hand, Verse 18:27 mentions “the Book”. The Qur’an was entirely revealed as a written Book in one night of the month of Ramadan (44:2-3, 2:185). That Book has not been brought down, in order to be touched or read by people (17:93, 4:153, 6:7). It was not revealed at once to the people, or as a written Book, but as an oral recitation at intervals (17:106, 25:32). One interpretation is that both Verses, 18:27 and 6:115, refer to the Book which no one can change, and was “perfected / completed, etc.”. Verse 13:39 says, “with Him is the Mother of the Book”. Likewise, the Bible, in Revelation 5:1-7, mentions a scroll sealed at the Throne which no one can open or look inside, except some. Similarly, the Qur’an says “Indeed, it is surely a Noble Qur’an, In a Book well-guarded, None touch it except the purified.” (56:77-79). It is interpreted that that Book did not change)(According to Verse 2:79, people could be able to write a book and say that it is from God, while it is not from God, but it does not change the fact that God’s Words (the Book) are preserved and are the ones to be followed. In other words, even if people say “this is from God”, while it is not, what they invented does not change God’s Words, because what they say is other than God’s Words)(For example, in the case of the Gospel, it is said that the author of the Gospel is unknown. If the author were to relate something that is true, then the Qur’an would confirm it, but if it were to contradict the Qur’an, the Qur’an eliminates it. The Qur’an is a Criterion to know what is true (3:4))(Note: the root of “tammat” (fulfilled) is “Ta-Miim-Miim”, and it means “to be entire / full / whole, complete, perfect, fulfilled, accomplish, etc.”)(Note: “Qur’an” means “Recitation”)(Allah knows best)
13:39 Allah eliminates and confirms what He wills, and with Him is the Mother of the Book.
(Verses 18:27 and 13:39 are not mutually exclusive, because, for example, in this case that the direction of Prayer was changed, to test people, the Mother of the Book remains unchanged. The “new” direction is in fact the “oldest” one (3:96), and, on the other hand, the previous direction is not explicitly “ordered to be followed” or mentioned by name in the Qur’an, so a Verse does not abrogate another Verse in the Qur’an, but the Verse is explanatory)(Allah knows best)
5:47 And let the People of the Gospel judge by what Allah has revealed in it. And whoever does not judge by what Allah has revealed, then those are the defiantly disobedient. 5:48 And We have revealed to you the Book in truth, confirming the Book that came before it and as a guardian over it. So judge between them by what Allah has revealed and do not follow their vain desires when the truth has come to you. For each of you We have made a law and a clear way. And if Allah had willed, He would have made you one community [and] but to test you in what He has given you; so race to good. To Allah you will all return, then He will inform you concerning that over which you used to differ.
(In regard to if the Qur’an abrogates the Bible. See the link below “Does the Qur'an replace the Bible?”)(Allah knows best)
35:43 (Due to) arrogance in the land and plotting of evil; but the evil plot does not encompass except its own people. Then do they wait except the way of the former? But you will never find in the way of Allah any change, and you will never find in the way of Allah any alteration.
4:82 Then do they not ponder on the Qur’an? If it had been from other than Allah, surely they would have found much contradiction in it.
(There are no contradictions in the Qur’an. See the link below “Is there any contradiction in the Qur'an?”)(Allah knows best)
2:85 Then you are those who kill yourselves and evict a party of you from their homes, you support one another against them in sin and transgression. And if they come to you as captives, you ransom; while their eviction was forbidden to you. So do you believe in part of the Book and disbelieve in part? Then what should be the recompense for those who do so among you, except disgrace in worldly life; and on the Day of Resurrection they will be sent back to the most severe punishment? And Allah is not unaware of what you do.
15:9 Indeed, We have sent down the Reminder, and indeed, We are surely its Guardians.
(The Qur’an has been preserved, and there are no abrogated verses. See the link below “Has the Qur'an been preserved?”)(Allah knows best)
3:119 Lo, you are those who love them, but they do not love you and you believe in the Book - all of it. And when they meet you, they say, "We believe." And when they are alone they bite the fingers tips at you in rage. Say, Die in your rage. Indeed. Allah is All-Knowing of what is in the breasts."
10:64 For them are glad tidings in the life of the world and in the Hereafter. (There can be) no change in the Words of Allah. That is the great success.
(The context of verse 10:64 is that the glad tidings for them are not changed)(Allah knows best)
5:3 Are made unlawful for you the dead animals, blood, the flesh of swine, and that which is dedicated to other than Allah, and that which is strangled, and that which is fatally hit, and that which has a fatal fall, and that which is gored by horns, and that which ate the wild animal except what you slaughtered, and that which is sacrificed on stone altars, and that you seek division by divining arrows - that is grave disobedience. This day those who disbelieve have despaired of your religion; so do not fear them, but fear Me. This day I have perfected your religion for you and I have completed My Favor upon you, and I have approved for you Islam as a religion. But whoever is forced by hunger with no inclination to sin, then indeed, Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful. 5:4 They ask you what is made lawful for them. Say, "Lawful for you are the good things and what you have taught of hunting animals, ones who train animals to hunt, you teach them of what Allah has taught you. So eat of what they catch for you, and mention the name of Allah on it, and fear Allah. Indeed, Allah is swift in taking account. 5:5 This day good things are made lawful for you; and the food of those who were given the Book is lawful for you, and your food is lawful for them. And chaste women from the believers and chaste women from those who were given the Book before you, when you have given them their bridal due, being chaste, not being lewd, nor ones (who are) taking secret lovers. And whoever denies the faith - then surely his deeds are wasted and in the Hereafter he will be among the losers.
(Verse 5:5 does not abrogate Verse 5:3 (unlawful food))(Each’s food is lawful to each other (5:5) because the Qur’an prohibits in Verse 5:3-5 that meat which is prohibited in the Bible)(The Qur’an refers to “their food”, but Christians do not eat “their food” anymore unless they eat Muslims’ food, (because Christians, in that case, do not follow their own religion), that is because the same food is prohibited in the Bible and in the Qur’an)(Verse 5:5 specifies “good things are made lawful for you”, so the dead animals, blood, pig meat, etc., are not good things)(Acts 15:29 says, “you are to abstain from food sacrificed to idols, from blood, from the meat of strangled animals and from sexual immorality. You will do well to avoid these things”. Other verses in that sense: Acts 15:20, Acts 21:25, Exodus 34:15, Revelation 2:20, Deuteronomy 14:21, Leviticus 22:8, etc.)(In regard to pig meat, it is forbidden in Deuteronomy 14:8, Leviticus 11:7-8, Isaiah 66:17, Isaiah 65:2-4, etc.)(According to Christians some verses in the Bible declare all foods clean (e.g. Mark 7:15-20), but it contradicts the Torah, the Gospel itself and the Qur’an. Matthew 5:17 says, “do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them”)(Even if Mark 7:15-20 were to declare all foods clean, it is said that Jesus did not write the Gospel, but is anonymous, and was written in Greek, instead of Aramaic (the language of Jesus), and the oldest Bible sources and modern ones differ with each other, so it is not a reliable source)(In the Bible, there is no an explicit mention of unlawful meat to be allowed (e.g. it does not explicitly say that pig meat is allowed), but it is an assumption and a misinterpretation. It also contradicts early Christians’ practice of following the Law (e.g. Acts 15:5, 15:20))(Allah knows best)
89:3 And the even and the odd,
(Some people wrongly say that there are missing verses in the Qur’an, for example, the so-called “stoning verse”, while there are no any single missing or omitted verse from the Qur’an. The proof that the Qur’an has been preserved and that there are no missing or omitted verses is that: the Qur’an has 114 Chapters. The sum of chapters’ numbers in the Qur’an is 6,555. The total number of Verses is 6,236. When it is added each Chapter’s number with its Verses’ total, the sum of the odd results is 6,555. That’s the same number than the sum of chapters’ numbers: 6,555. And when it is added each Chapter’s number with its Verses’ total, the sum of the even results is 6,236; that’s the same number than the total number of Verses in the Qur’an: 6,236. So, the numbers match)(In addition, the resulting odd numbers are 57; and the resulting even numbers are 57 as well)(The result is not a coincidence, but there was a purpose to make it so. It proves that if someone were to add or subtract a verse, then an odd number would be even, or an even number would be odd, then the whole analysis would be wrong)(See the calculations in the article below: “Even and odd numbers in the Qur’an”)(There are other mathematical proofs (e.g. the Golden ratio in the Qur’an). See the link below, “Has the Qur'an been preserved?”)(In regard to the satanic verses story, it is obviously false and only found in Al-Tabari. There are many false stories in Al-Tabari and the Tafsir of Al-Tabari. So, whenever a critic or Islamophobe quotes a story from Ibn Ishaq or Al-Tabari, as an authentic and reliable Islamic source - it’s most likely false, and the stories are not even confirmed in the Qur’an or the major hadith collections, then it is to be rejected)(Al-Tabari was born in Iran 207 years later, after Muhammad, so he differed from early sources)(Allah knows best)
33:50 O Prophet, Indeed, We have made lawful to you your wives to whom you have given their bridal money and those whom you rightfully possess from what Allah has given to you and the daughters of your paternal uncles and the daughters of your paternal aunts and the daughters of your maternal uncles and the daughters of your maternal aunts who emigrated with you and a believing woman if she gives herself to the Prophet, and the Prophet wishes to marry her - only for you, excluding the believers. We certainly, know what We have made obligatory upon them concerning their wives and those whom they rightfully possess, that there should be no discomfort upon you. And Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
(Even the Verses which are only addressed to the Prophet, or only addressed to his wives, are not abrogated, because the Messenger is an example for people (33:21); (he had additional prayers (17:79); his wives were not to display themselves (33:33),...). And even if believers are prohibited from doing certain matters (33:50, 33:53), which only the Messenger can do, it is not a matter of abrogation, or of Verses being out-of-date, or that they are useless, but each Verse has a purpose; for example, for mathematical calculations, or, for the purpose that some people might feel aversion towards the Qur’an (4:61, 17:41), when they read that the Messengers were favored over themselves; some people are guided and others are astray after reading the Qur’an (2:26, 74:31); or, for example, the Verses about favoring Messengers may also be examples/explanatory of believers/people being in different degrees or favored for their righteousness; so it is in line with other Verses (9:19, 3:113, 46:19, 43:32); etc.)(Allah knows best)
39:23 Allah has revealed the best statement (l-hadithi) - a Book, resembling each other oft-repeated. The skins of those who fear their Lord shiver from it, then their skins and their hearts relax at the remembrance of Allah. That is the guidance of Allah, He guides with it whom He wills. And whoever Allah lets go astray, then there is no guide for him.
(Some people wrongly say that a hadith might replace “abrogated” Verses, but there is no abrogation in the Qur’an. A hadith which might contradict the Qur’an is actually abolished by the Qur’an Itself)(Allah knows best)
9:5 Then, when the sacred months have passed, then kill the polytheists wherever you find them and seize them and besiege them and sit (in wait) for them at every place of ambush. But if they repent and establish prayer and give the zakah, then leave their way. Indeed, Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
(Some non-Muslims call Verse 9:5 “verse of the sword”, and they say that it abrogates other verses of the Qur’an, while the word “sword” is not mentioned in the entire Qur’an, so, the Qur’an does not support that there is a verse called “verse of the sword” (nor that it abrogates). On the other hand, the word “sword” is mentioned more than 400 times in the Bible)(There is no abrogation in the Qur’an, but Chapter 9 confirms that fighting is in self-defense (2:190-191, 9:13, 42:39, 16:126...), and against oppression (2:193, 2:191, 8:39, 9:13,…), just like in other Chapters. See the link below, “Is Surah 9 the most violent Chapter in the Qur'an and abrogates peaceful Chapters?”)(Allah knows best)
