Can God be harmed?

Can God be harmed?

3:144 Muhammad is not but a messenger. Messengers have passed on before him. So if he was to die or be killed, would you turn back on your heels? And he who turns back on his heels will never harm (yadurra) Allah (in) anything; but Allah will reward the grateful.

(Verse 3:144 says that God will never be harmed, on the other hand, Verse 33:57 uses the word “annoy”, which, its root word is sometimes translated as “harm” depending on the context. There is no contradiction, because these two Verses use different root words (“Dad-Ra-Ra” vs. “Alif-Dhal-Ya”). In regard to “yadurra” (harm) in Verse 3:144, its root is “Dad-Ra-Ra”, and it means “to harm / hurt / injure / afflict, make inconvenient, annoy, evil adversity, famine, vicissitude of time, disease / death, loss / tribulation / hardship, driven by necessity, etc.”)(So, God will never be injured, afflicted, etc)(Allah knows best)

33:57 Indeed, those who annoy (yu’dhuna) Allah and His Messenger, Allah has cursed them in the world and the Hereafter and prepared for them a humiliating punishment.

(The root of “yu’dhu” is “Alif-Dhal-Ya”, and it means “he was or became annoyed / molested / hurt, experience / suffer what is disagreeable, state of annoyance”)(So, “Dad-Ra-Ra” and “Alif-Dhal-Ya” have a different meaning, because only “Dad-Ra-Ra” is defined as “injure, famine, disease, etc.”, which implies physical injury or harm; in that sense, God will never be harmed (3:144). On the other hand, “Alif-Dhal-Ya” can be used in the context of “telling annoying words (9:61, 33:69), or doing annoying things (33:53)”. Verses 33:53 and 33:69-70 are the context of Verse 33:57, and confirm that it is not a physical harm)(In conclusion, despite both words, “Dad-Ra-Ra” and “Alif-Dhal-Ya”, are defined as “annoy / being annoyed”, but “Dad-Ra-Ra” implies an annoyance with or by physical harm, while “Alif-Dhal-Ya” does not imply physical harm)(Allah knows best)

33:53 O you who believe, do not enter the houses of the Prophet except when permission is given to you for a meal, without awaiting its preparation. But when you are invited, then enter; and when you have eaten, then disperse without seeking to remain for a conversation. Indeed, that was troubling (yu’dhi) the Prophet, and he is shy of you. But Allah is not shy of the truth. And when you ask them for something, then ask them from behind a screen. That is purer for your hearts and their hearts. And it is not for you that you trouble (tu’dhu) the Messenger of Allah nor that you should ever marry his wives after him. Indeed, that is an enormity near Allah. … 33:69 O you who believe, (do) not be like those who abused (adhaw) Moses; then Allah cleared him of what they said. And he was honorable near Allah. 33:70 O you who believe, fear Allah and speak a right word.

9:61 And among them are those who hurt (yu’dhuna) the Prophet and say, "He is an ear." Say, "An ear of goodness for you that believes in Allah and believes the believers and is a mercy to those who believe among you." And those who hurt the Messenger of Allah - for them is a painful punishment.

(Verse 9:61 uses the same word than Verse 33:57, and it also confirms that “Alif-Dhal-Ya” is not a physical harm, according to its context)(Allah knows best)

3:111 They will never harm you (yadurrukum) except a hurt (adhan). And if they fight you, they will turn the backs (towards) you, then they will not be helped.

(Verse 3:111 uses the root “Dad-Ra-Ra” which, according to its definition, can imply physical injury or harm; and the Verse also uses the root “Alif-Dhal-Ya” which can imply only a non-physical annoyance; so, this Verse makes distinction and clarifies that they cannot physically injure him, or annoying him with physical harm, but they could annoy him, in a way other than that)(Allah knows best)
