Similar size and distance of the sun and moon?
75:6 He asks, "When is the Day of Resurrection?" 75:7 So when the vision is dazzled, 75:8 And the moon becomes dark, 75:9 And the sun and the moon are joined (wajumi’a), 75:10 On that Day man will say, "Where is the escape?" 75:11 By no means, there is no refuge. 75:12 To your Lord, that Day, is the place of rest. 75:13 On that Day man will be informed of what he sent forth and kept back.
(It is a prediction of an event that will happen on the Day of Resurrection, so the Verse does not say that they are at a similar distance or that they are put together at this present moment, but the sun and the moon are joined / brought together on the Day of Resurrection)(The Verse does not say that they have a similar size, but some non-Muslims invent falsehood)(According to Verses 6:77-78 of the Qur’an, the sun is greater and farther away than the moon)(Another point is that the Verse might not mean that the sun and the moon are united or caused to become one, but according to some definitions of the word “jumi’a”, they might just meet / be together. The root of “jumi’a” is “Jiim-Miim-Ayn”, and it means “to collect or gather, bring together, assemble or congregate, unite or connect or form a connection, bring into a state of union, to pray in congregation, coexist with one, to be compact / compressed / contracted, to meet or be in company with another, etc.”)(Allah knows best)
6:77 When he saw the moon rising, he said, "This is my Lord." But when it set, he said, "If my Lord does not guide me, I will surely be among the people who went astray." 6:78 When he saw the sun rising, he said, "This is my Lord, this is greater." But when it set, he said, "O my people, indeed, I am free of what you associate."
(Although the sun’s diameter is about 400 times larger than that of the moon – the sun is also about 400 times farther away, so the sun and the moon appear nearly the same size as seen from Earth. Verses 6:77-78 say that the sun is greater than the moon, while both are seen from the earth with the same or similar size, so the Verse implicitly says that the sun is farther than the moon)(Allah knows best)
36:40 It is not permitted for the sun to overtake (tud’rika) the moon, nor can the night outstrip the day, but all are floating in an orbit.
(One interpretation of this Verse is that the sun cannot draw the moon into itself, or enter its orbit and collide with it)(“tud’rika” also means “grasp”. The sun’s gravitational pull is strong to hold much larger masses than the moon and at much greater distances, but it is not permitted for the sun to grasp the moon, so, the moon keeps revolving around the Earth, instead of directly around the sun)(So, this Verse might also implicitly say that the sun is greater than the moon, because the sun could overtake/reach/grasp the moon by the sun’s gravitational pull, but it is not permitted)(The Root of “tud’rika” (overtakes) is “Dal-Ra-Kaf”, and it means “to reach, get, catch, overtake, outdistance, outrun, catch up, come up, to attain, arrive, to obtain, to grasp, etc.)(Allah knows best)
