Is there a permanent barrier between fresh and salt water?

25:53 And He is the One Who has released the two seas (l-bahrayni), (this one) palatable and sweet and (this one) salty (and) bitter, and He has made a barrier between them (baynahuma), and a partition that is forbidden.

(The root of “bahrayni” is “Ba-Ha-Ra”, and it means “a vast expanse of water (ocean, sea, huge river)”, so it can be equally used for both the sea and the great rivers)(Rivers usually have sweeter water than the sea, but yet they never overcome each other)(“l-bahrayni” (two seas) and “baynahuma” (between them) are dual in Arabic, so the barrier is between the two seas (e.g. where they are located), not between fresh and salt water, because fresh and salt water are eventually mixed in the estuary)(So, the barrier between the two seas makes each sea to retain its own characteristics (one fresh, another salty) which are suitable for the organisms living in each environment)(“hadha” (this one) is singular in this sentence “(this one (“hadha”)) palatable and sweet” and “(this one (“hadha”)) salty (and) bitter”)(Another interpretation is that the Verse refers to water stratification. According to the article “Stratification (water)” in wikipedia, “water stratification is when water masses with different properties – salinity (halocline), oxygenation (chemocline), density (pycnocline), temperature (thermocline) – form layers that act as barriers to water mixing”. And the article “halocline” in wikipedia says, “In oceanography, a halocline is a subtype of chemocline caused by a strong, vertical salinity gradient within a body of water. Because salinity (in concert with temperature) affects the density of seawater, it can play a role in its vertical stratification.”)(Allah knows best)

55:19 He released the two seas (l-bahrayni), meeting. 55:20 Between both of them (baynahuma) is a barrier, which they cannot transgress. 55:21 So which of the favors of your Lord will you both deny?

(In these Verses “two seas” and “between both of them” are also dual, so the barrier is between the two seas (e.g. the salty or sweet characteristics of them, where each one is located))(Allah knows best)

27:61 Or Who made the earth a firm abode and made (in) its midst rivers and made for it firm mountains and made between the two seas a barrier? Is there any god with Allah? Nay, most of them do not know.

(This Verse also speak about the barrier between the two seas, and also specifies “rivers”; so this Verse might support the interpretation that the two seas refer to the sea and the great rivers, which are connected but each one retains its own characteristics)(Allah knows best)

35:12 And not alike are the two seas. This is fresh, sweet, pleasant to drink, and this (is) salty (and) bitter. And from each you eat fresh meat and you extract ornaments that you wear, and you see the ships cleaving through, so that you may seek of His Bounty, and that you may be grateful.

(From each, the sea and the great rivers, people eat fishes, and ships pass through)(Allah knows best)

18:60 And when Moses said to his boy, "I will not cease until I reach the junction of the two seas or I continue for a long period." 18:61 But when they reached the junction between them, they forgot their fish, and it took its way into the sea, slipping away.
