Can you take non-Muslims as friends?

Can you take non-Muslims as friends?

5:51 O you who believe, do not take the Jews and the Christians as allies (awliyaa). Some of them are allies (awliyau) to others. And whoever among you takes them as allies (yatawallahum), then indeed, he is of them. Indeed, Allah does not guide the wrongdoing people.

(One interpretation is that Verse 5:51 is complemented by Verse 60:9, “Allah only forbids you from those who fight you because of religion and expel you from your homes and aid in your expulsion – that you make allies of them”)(Verses 5:51 and 60:9 use the same word. The Verses of the Qur’an are not mutually exclusive but complement each other)(Allah knows best)

60:9 Allah only forbids you from those who fight you in the religion and drive you out of your homes and support in your expulsion, that you make them allies (tawallawhum). And whoever makes them allies (yatawallahum), then those are the wrongdoers.

4:140 And surely He has revealed to you in the Book that when you hear the Verses of Allah being rejected and ridiculed, then do not sit with them until they engage in a conversation other than that. Indeed, you then, (would be) like them. Indeed, Allah will gather the hypocrites and disbelievers in Hell all together.

(According to Verse 4:140, if people sitting with you deny and ridicule the Verses, you do not have to sit with them, until they enter into another conversation. So it seems okay sitting and talking to them, while they do not deny and ridicule. In Verse 5:57, it is prohibited to take those who ridicule the religion as allies)(Allah knows best)

6:68 And when you see those who engage (in vain talks) about Our Verses, then turn away from them until they engage in a talk other than it. And if Satan causes you to forget, then do not sit after the reminder with the people - the wrongdoers.

5:57 O you who believe, do not take allies those who take your religion in ridicule and fun among those who are given the Book before you and the disbelievers. And fear Allah, if you are believers.

31:14 And We have enjoined on man (in respect) of his parents – his mother carried him in weakness upon weakness, and his weaning is in two years that "Be grateful to Me and to your parents; towards Me is the destination. 31:15 And if they strive against you that you associate partners with Me of what you have no any knowledge, then do not obey both of them. And accompany them with kindness in the world, and follow the path (of him) who turns to Me. Then towards Me is your return, then I will inform you of what you used to do"

(It is okay to accompany your disbelieving parents with kindness in the world (31:15). The root of “sahib” is “Sad-Ha-Ba”, and it means “to company, be the friend of or companion to, etc.”, while the word “protector / ally” could be used in the context of fighting (48:22, 60:9)(E.g. Chapter 9 is in a context of fighting (9:8-29), so it is forbidden to take them as allies (9:23)))(The root of the word “awliyaa” (allies) is “Waw-Lam-Ya”, and it means “to be close, near, follow, be up to, direction of following; walli – direct; walii – protecting benefactor, helper, ally, successor, heir, guardian; etc.”)(Allah knows best)

9:23 O you who believe, do not take your fathers and your brothers as allies if they prefer disbelief over belief. And whoever of you takes them as allies, then those are the wrongdoers.

(Chapter 9 is in the context of fighting (9:5-6, 9:8, 9:10, 9:12-14, 9:19-20, 9:29). And fighting is in self-defense and against oppression)(Allah knows best)

64:14 O you who believe, indeed, from your spouses and your children are enemies to you, so beware of them. But if you pardon and overlook and forgive, then indeed, Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful. 64:15 Your wealth and your children are only a trial, and with Allah is a great reward.

(There are enemies among someone’s spouses and children. Fighting is in self-defense in Islam, but, it is interpreted that Verses 64:14-15 are in the context in which there is no war, so Verse 64:14 says, “if you pardon and overlook and forgive...”. The word “allies” is not mentioned. Some Christians are hypocrites when they argue about the Qur’an, while according to Luke 14:26, Jesus said “If anyone comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters—yes, even their own life—such a person cannot be my disciple”)(Allah knows best)

5:55 Only your ally is Allah and His Messenger, and those who believe, and those who establish prayer and give zakah and they are those who bow down. 5:56 And whoever takes as an ally Allah and His Messenger and those who believe, then indeed the party of Allah - they are the victorious (l-ghalibuna).

(One interpretation is that you cannot take disbelievers as allies, in the context of fighting, because Verse 5:56 mention the words “party” and “victorious”: the root of “ghalibuna” (victorious) is “Gh-Lam-Ba” and it means “overcame, conquered, subdued, mastered, surpassed, superior in power or force, gain victory”, so it is in the context of war)(This interpretation is supported by Verse 60:9, “Allah only forbids you from those who fight you in the religion and drive you out of your homes and support in your expulsion, that you make them allies”)(Allah knows best)

60:13 O you who believe, do not make allies of a people upon whom is Allah's Wrath. Indeed, they despair of the Hereafter as the disbelievers despair of the companions of the graves.

29:41 The example of those who take protectors besides Allah is like the spider who takes a house. And indeed, the weakest of houses is surely the house of the spider, if they know.

3:28 (Let) not the believers take the disbelievers as allies instead of the believers. And whoever does that, then he (has) not from Allah in anything except that you fear from them, (as) a precaution. And Allah warns you (of) Himself, and to Allah is the final return.

4:144 O you who believe, do not take the disbelievers as allies instead of the believers. Do you wish to make for Allah a clear evidence against yourselves?

4:139 Those who take the disbelievers as allies instead of the believers. Do they seek honor with them? But indeed, all honor is for Allah.

4:89 They wish if you disbelieve as they disbelieved and you would be alike. So do not take from among them allies until they emigrate in the way of Allah. But if they turn back, seize them and kill them wherever you find them. And do not take from among them any ally or helper, 4:90 Except those who join a group between whom and you there is a treaty or those who come to you with hearts restraining them from fighting you or fighting their people. And if Allah had willed, surely He would have given them power over you, and they would surely have fought you. So if they withdraw from you and do not fight against you and offer you peace, then Allah has not made for you a way against them.

(Verses 4:89-90 confirm that you cannot take allies in a context of fighting, because the word “fighting” is mentioned. Verse 4:90 explicitly says, “except ... those who come to you with hearts restraining them from fighting you or fighting their people”; so the exception to the prohibition of taking allies is that they must stop fighting you; this also confirms that fighting in Islam is done in self-defense (and against oppression))(The Verses complement each other)(Allah knows best)

60:1 O you who believe, do not take My enemies and your enemies as allies offering them love while they have disbelieved in what came to you of the truth, driving out the Messenger and yourselves because you believe in Allah, your Lord. If you come forth to strive in My way and to seek My Pleasure. You confide to them love, but I Am most knowing of what you conceal and what you declare. And whoever does it among you then he has certainly strayed from the straight path.

(According to the Verse, the disbelievers were driving out the Messenger and the believers for religious reasons, so the disbelievers are the intolerant ones, then you cannot take them as allies)(Allah knows best)

60:8 Allah does not forbid you from those who do not fight you in the religion and do not drive you out of your homes, that you deal kindly and justly with them. Indeed, Allah loves those who act justly.

29:46 And do not argue with the People of the Book except by which is best, except those who do wrong among them, and say, "We believe in that which has been revealed to us and to you. And our God and your God is One, and we submit to Him."

3:73 And do not believe except those who follow your religion." Say, "Indeed the guidance is the Guidance of Allah – lest someone be given the like of that which was given to you or that they may argue with you near your Lord." Say, "Indeed, the Bounty is in the Hand of Allah. He gives it to whom He wills, and Allah is All-Encompassing, All-Knowing."

9:6 And if anyone of the polytheists seek your protection then grant him protection until he hears the Words of Allah. Then escort him to his place of safety. That is because they are a people who do not know.

(Verse 9:6 confirms that fighting is in self-defense, because if the enemies’ intention is other than fighting (e.g. seeking your protection), then they are not killed)(Allah knows best)

49:13 O mankind, indeed, We created you from a male and a female and We made you nations and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you near Allah is the most righteous of you. Indeed, Allah is All-Knower, All-Aware.

5:82 Surely, you will find the strongest among people in enmity towards those who believe, the Jews and those who are polytheists; and surely you will find nearest of them in affection to those who believe, those who say, "We are Christians." That is because among them are priests and monks, and that they are not arrogant.

60:4 Indeed, there is for you a good example in Abraham and those with him, when they said to their people, "Indeed, we are disassociated from you and from what you worship besides Allah. We have denied you, and there has appeared between us and you enmity and hatred forever until you believe in Allah Alone." Except for the saying of Abraham to his father, "Surely, I ask forgiveness for you, but I do not have power of anything for you from Allah. Our Lord, upon You we put our trust, and to You we turn, and to You is the final return. … 60:6 Certainly, there is for you in them a good example, for (he) who is hopeful (in) Allah and the Last Day. And whoever turns away, then indeed, Allah is Free of need, the Praiseworthy.

(The context is about fighting (60:1-9). But even if enmity and hatred were just because of their disbelief, Verse 60:4 does not say that you cannot accompany them. The Verses are not mutually exclusive)(Abraham made people’s idols into pieces, except one (21:58); people tried to kill Abraham (21:68-69); and they remained devoted to their idols (26:71); so that’s an obvious and good reason for appearing between them enmity and hatred forever)(Allah knows best)

43:67 Friends (al-akhilau) on that Day, some of them (will be) enemies to others, except (for) the righteous,

(The root of the word “friend” is “KH-Lam-Lam” (43:67, 25:28), and it means “act as a true and sincere friend, show true and sincere affection / friendship / love, etc.”. This word is the opposite of “enemy” (43:67). Verse 25:28 uses the same word: “I wish I had not taken that one as a friend (khalilan)”. You should not have friends that are a bad influence on you)(Allah knows best)

25:27 And the Day the wrongdoer will bite his hands, he will say, "O I wish, I had taken with the Messenger a way. 25:28 O woe to me, I wish I had not taken that one as a friend (khalilan). 25:29 Verily, he led me astray from the Reminder after it (had) come to me. And is Satan, to man, a deserter."

(According to the context, the friend led him astray, so he became a “wrongdoer” (25:27), and he did not take with the Messenger a way (25:27); so, these are reasons to be punished; the Verse does not say that the reason to be punished was to have such a friend while he was a “good-doer”)(Allah knows best)

3:118 O you who believe[d], (do) not take (as) intimates (bitanatan) other than yourselves, (for) they will not spare you (any) ruin. They wish what distresses you. Indeed, the hatred (has become) apparent from their mouths, and what their breasts conceal (is) greater. We certainly made clear for you the Verses, if you were (to use) reason. 3:119 Lo, you are those who love them, but they do not love you and you believe in the Book - all of it. And when they meet you, they say, "We believe." And when they are alone they bite the fingers tips at you in rage. Say, Die in your rage. Indeed. Allah is All-Knowing of what is in the breasts."

(“Bitanatan” might imply something confidential or private among people. According to the context, disbelievers wish to distress believers, and “the hatred has become apparent from their mouths, and what their breasts conceal is greater” (3:118). In that sense, the non-Muslims are hypocrites, they make objections against Islam and the Qur’an, as if Muslims were enemies to them, for no reason, while they are the ones who are the enemies to us, so the Qur’an warns us about them, and Muslims must react according to what they do. In addition, Verse 3:119 says, “you are those who love them, but they do not love you”. So, he has to be careful about them. It is a fact that even today, many people do not like Muslims; so Muslims must react according to what they do (self-defense))(The root of “bitanatan” (intimates) is “Ba-Tay-Nun”, and it means “entering into something; penetrating mentally or knowing something; something becoming hidden or unapparent, esoteric, concealed or covert; a lining or inner covering, inside or interior of anything, inner story; particular or special intimate, friend or associate, etc.”)(Allah knows best)

2:120 And the Jews and the Christians will never be pleased with you until you follow their religion. Say, "Indeed, the Guidance of Allah is the Guidance." And if you follow their desires after what has come to you of the knowledge, you will have neither any protector from Allah nor any helper.

58:22 You will not find a people who believe in Allah and the Last Day loving those who oppose Allah and His Messenger even if they were their fathers or their sons or their brothers or their kindred. Those - He has decreed faith in their hearts and supported them with a spirit from Him. And He will admit them to Gardens underneath which rivers flow, they will abide in it forever. Allah is pleased with them, and they are pleased with Him. They are the party of Allah. No doubt, indeed, the party of Allah, they are the successful ones.

11:113 And (do) not incline to those who do wrong, lest the Fire touches you, and not (is) for you/(you do not have) besides Allah any protectors; then you will not be helped.
