Does fasting have medical benefits?

Does fasting have medical benefits?

2:183 O you who believe, fasting is prescribed to you as it was prescribed to those before you, so that you may become righteous. 2:184 Days numbered. So whoever among you is sick or on a journey, then a prescribed number of days, other. And upon those who can afford it, a ransom of feeding a poor. And whoever volunteers good then it is better for him. And if you fast, it is better for you, if you know.

(According to the article “Fasting research wins Nobel Prize in medicine. Is it right for you?” by John Douillard, “the 2016 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine was awarded to Japan’s Dr. Yoshinori Ohsumi for his discoveries of the underlying mechanisms of a physiological process called autophagy. Autophagy is a natural process by which the body degrades and recycles damaged cells, proteins and toxins. Autophagy comes from two Greek words, auto meaning “self” and phagy meaning “to eat”. This is the body’s way of cleaning house. It happens during starvation, calorie restriction, and fasting. If the body fails to engage in autophagy, damaged cells and structures can accumulate dangerously. Autophagy is one method that the body uses to naturally neutralize cancer cells and degrade cells infected by harmful bacteria and viruses. Today, we are learning that intermittent fasting can deliver numerous health benefits. Overeating can cause significant harm, including increased risks of cardiovascular, weight, blood sugar, brain, mood and other health concerns. Intermittent fasting, on the other hand, has been linked to numerous health benefits, including: decreased diabetes risk, decreased cardiovascular risk, improved longevity, protection against cancer, reduced risk of neurological concerns, decreased inflammation, balanced lipid levels, reduced blood pressure, reduced oxidative stress, balanced weight”)(Allah knows best)

2:196 And complete the Hajj and Umrah for Allah . But if you are prevented, then what can be obtained with ease of sacrificial animals. And do not shave your heads until the sacrificial animal has reached its place of slaughter. And whoever among you is ill or has an ailment of the head then a ransom of fasting or charity or sacrifice. And when you are secure, then whoever performs Umrah followed by Hajj, then what can be obtained with ease of sacrificial animals. And whoever cannot find - then a fast of three days during Hajj and of seven when you have returned. Those are ten complete. This is for those whose family is not present in al-Masjid al-haram. And fear Allah and know that Allah is severe in penalty.

(Another point is that if someone is not able of fasting, he can do other things instead (2:196, 58:4))(Allah knows best)

58:3 And those who pronounce zihar to their wives, then go back on what they said, then freeing of a slave before they touch each other. That you are admonished thereby. And Allah is All-Aware of what you do. 58:4 Then whoever (does) not find, then fasting (for) two months consecutively before they both touch each other. But (he) who not is able, then (the) feeding (of) sixty needy one(s). That - so that you may believe in Allah and His Messenger, and these (are the) limits (of) Allah, and for the disbelievers (is) a painful punishment.
