Did Muhammad ask for a fee?
12:104 And you do not ask them for any reward (ajrin). It is not but a reminder to the worlds.
36:21 Follow those who do not ask of you any payment (ajran), and they are rightly guided.
8:41 And know that anything you obtain as spoils of war (ghanim’tum), then that, one fifth of it is for Allah, and for the Messenger, and for the near relatives, and the orphans, and the needy, and the wayfarer, if you believe in Allah, and in what We sent down to Our slave on the day of the criterion, the day (when) the two forces met. And Allah is All-Powerful over everything.
(Some non-Muslims say that there is a contradiction in these Verses, but Verses 12:104 and 36:21 use the word “ajrin / ajran”, while Verse 8:41 uses the word “ghanim”, so there cannot be contradiction anyhow. The root of “ajrin / ajran” is “Alif-Jiim-Ra”, and it means “recompense / compensation / reward, hire / pay / wage for service, profit”. And the root of “ghanim” is “Gh-Nun-Miim”, and it means “obtained, got, took (usually in reference to spoils or booties); regaining, etc.”)(Allah knows best)
13:22 And those who are patient, seeking the Face of their Lord, and establish the prayer and spend from what We have provided them, secretly and publicly, and they repel the evil with good - for them is the final attainment of the Home -
(Another point is that the Prophet spent from his wealth (9:88), because it is ordered in the Qur’an; and because the Prophet followed the Qur’an (7:203). Those who hoard wealth and do not spend in the way of Allah will be punished (9:34-35))(Allah knows best)
9:103 Take from their wealth a charity (sadaqatan) by which you may purify them and cause them increase, and bless upon them. Indeed, your blessings are a reassurance for them. And Allah is All-Hearer, All-Knower.
(Verse 9:103 also uses a different word “sadaqatan” (a charity), so there cannot be contradiction anyhow; a charity has a function. According to Verse 9:60, “the charities are only for the poor, and the needy, and those who collect them, and those whose hearts are inclined, and in the (freeing of) the necks, and for those in debt and in the way of Allah, and the wayfarer”)(He who gives from his wealth, purify himself (92:18). God revealed Verse 9:103, in order to purify them. And giving charities is also “an obligation” (9:60))(Another point is that God gives provision (13:22, 2:212), so the Prophet did not ask for a payment, but God revealed it so that he may take a charity (e.g. as a collector), so that, ultimately, that charity may fulfill some of the functions mentioned in Verse 9:60 (e.g. he collected it, and/or he spent it in the way of Allah, and/or he gave it to the wayfarer and/or to those in debt (as a collector), and/or covering his own needs, etc.))(Allah knows best)
9:59 And if they (were) satisfied (with) what Allah and His Messenger gave them, and said, "Sufficient for us (is) Allah, Allah will give us of His Bounty and His Messenger. Indeed, we turn our hopes to Allah." 9:60 The charities are only for the poor, and the needy, and those who collect (wal-amilina) them, and those whose hearts are inclined, and in the (freeing of) the necks, and for those in debt and in the way of Allah, and the wayfarer - an obligation from Allah. And Allah is All-Knowing, All-Wise.
(Verses 9:59 and 59:7 confirm that the Messenger “gave them”; and Verse 59:7 is against stinginess and against wealth becoming a circulation among the rich ones)(Verse 93:8 confirms that the Messenger was made self-sufficient, so, not in need anymore. So, it could also be interpreted that he received charities for functions other than he being among the “needy” (e.g. collector of charities). And the Messenger is of those who does/give the charities too, according to the functions mentioned in Verse 9:60)(The root of “amilina” (those who collect) is “Ayn-Miim-Lam”, and it means “to do / make / act / work / operate / perform / construct / manufacture, paractice a handcraft, be active, one who does”)(“Charity” and “them” (9:60) are feminine words, so “them” refers to “charity”)(Allah knows best)
59:7 What Allah restored to His Messenger from the people of the towns, it is for Allah and His Messenger and for the kindred and the orphans and the needy and the wayfarer, that it may not become a circulation between the rich among you. And whatever the Messenger gives you, take it; and whatever he forbids you from it, refrain. And fear Allah. Indeed, Allah is severe in penalty. … 59:9 And those who settled (in) the home and (accepted) faith before them love (those) who emigrated to them, and they (do) not find any want in their breasts of what they were given but prefer over themselves, even though poverty was with them. And whoever is saved (from the) stinginess (of) his soul, then those [they] (are) the successful ones.
7:203 And when you do not bring them a Sign, they say, "Why have you not devised it?" Say, "I only follow what is revealed to me from my Lord. This is enlightenment from your Lord and guidance and mercy for a people who believe."
42:38 And those who respond to their Lord and establish prayer and their affairs (are conducted by) consultation among them, and spend from what We have provided them,
2:195 And spend in the way of Allah and let not your own hands throw yourselves into destruction. And do good; indeed, Allah loves the good-doers.
(“Spending in the way of Allah” is a transaction in which the reward is Paradise (9:111). So it benefits the one who spend)(Allah knows best)
9:111 Indeed, Allah has purchased from the believers their lives and their wealth, because for them is Paradise. They fight in the way of Allah, they slay and they are slain. A true promise upon Him, in the Torah, and the Gospel, and the Qur’an. And who is more faithful to his promise than Allah? So rejoice in your transaction which you have contracted. And that is the great success.
(The Verse says that “God has purchased”, not “Muhammad”. The Prophet and the believers contracted the transaction in order to obtain Paradise)(Allah knows best)
47:38 Here you are - these, called to spend in the way of Allah - but among you (are some) who withhold, and whoever withholds, then he only withholds from himself. But Allah is Free of need, while you are the needy. And if you turn away, He will replace (you) (with) a people other than you, then they will not be the likes of you.
57:10 And what is for you that you do not spend in the way of Allah? while for Allah is the heritage of the heavens and the earth? Not equal among you are those who spent before the victory and fought. Those are greater in degree than those who spent afterwards and fought. But to all, Allah has promised the best. And Allah is All-Aware of what you do.
9:88 But the Messenger and those who believed with him strove with their wealth and their lives. And those, for them are the good things, and those - they are the successful ones.
(According to Verse 9:88, the Messenger strove with his wealth. So, there is no a purpose of being rich, or making the religion a business to get rich or for hoarding money in this world)(Allah knows best)
9:34 O you who believe, indeed, many of the rabbis and the monks surely eat the wealth of the people in falsehood, and hinder from the way of Allah. And those who hoard the gold and silver, and do not spend it in the way of Allah, give them tidings of a painful punishment. 9:35 The Day it will be heated in the Fire of Hell, and their foreheads, and their flanks and their backs will be branded with it, "This is what you hoarded for yourselves, so taste what you used to hoard."
92:18 The one who gives his wealth, so that he may purify himself,
20:131 And do not extend your eyes towards that which We have given enjoyment, pairs of them, the splendor of the life of the world, by which We may test them. And the provision of your Lord is better and more lasting. 20:132 And enjoin prayer on your family and be steadfast therein. We do not ask you for provision; We provide for you, and the outcome is for the righteous.
42:23 That is of which Allah gives glad tidings to His slaves - those who believe and do righteous deeds. Say, "I do not ask you any payment (ajran) for it except the love among the relatives." And whoever earns any good, We increase for him good therein. Indeed, Allah is Oft-Forgiving, All-Appreciative.
(There is an exception in Verse 42:23, but there is no contradiction because it is not a monetary payment. So, despite Verse 42:23 uses the same word than Verses 12:104 and 36:21, but two kinds of payments are distinguished in Verse 42:23, one is about wealth, and another is love)(Another point is that the Verses of the Qur’an are not mutually exclusive but complement each other, so there is no mistake in telling a rule, and another Verse telling its exception)(Allah knows best)
11:29 And O my people! I (do) not ask (of) you for it any wealth (malan). My reward (is) not except from Allah. And I am not going to drive away those who believed. Indeed, they (will) be meeting their Lord, but I see you (are) an ignorant people.
(Verse 11:29 is similar to Verses 12:104 and 36:21, and confirms that “payment” is in the context of wealth, while the exception in Verse 42:23 is about love)(Allah knows best)
52:40 Or do you ask them for a payment (ajran), so they are overburdened with a debt.
68:46 Or do you ask them for a payment (ajran), so they are burdened with a debt?
2:280 And if the (debtor) is in difficulty, then postponement until ease. And if you remit (it) as charity, (it is) better for you. If you know.
9:128 Certainly, a Messenger (has) come to you from yourselves. Grievous to him is what you suffer, (he is) concerned over you, to the believers (he is) kind (and) merciful (rahimun).
(The Messenger is called “rahimun” in Verse 9:128. According to the root dictionary of the Holy Qur’an, the word “rahim” denotes the idea of constant repetition and giving)(Allah knows best)
9:74 They swear by Allah (that) they said nothing, while certainly they said (the) word (of) [the] disbelief and disbelieved after their (pretense of) Islam, and planned [of] what they could not attain. And they were not resentful except that Allah and His Messenger had enriched them of His Bounty. So if they repent, it is better for them, and if they turn away, Allah will punish them (with) a painful punishment, in the world and (in) the Hereafter. And (there is) no for them on the earth any protector [and] nor a helper. 9:75 And among them (is he) who made a covenant with Allah, "If He gives us out of His bounty, surely we will give charity and surely we will be among the righteous." 9:76 But when He gave them of His Bounty, they became stingy with it and turned away while they were averse.
(The Messenger followed the Qur’an (7:203), he spent from what he was provided (13:22))(Allah knows best)
104:2 The one who collects wealth and counts it. 104:3 Thinking that his wealth will make him immortal. 104:4 Nay, he will surely be thrown in(to) the Crusher. 104:5 And what will make you know what the Crusher (is)? 104:6 A Fire kindled (by) Allah,
56:42 In scorching fire and scalding water, … 56:45 Indeed, they were before that indulging in affluence. 56:46 And were persisting in great sin,
10:72 But if you turn away, then I have not asked you for any reward. My reward is not but on Allah, and I have been commanded to be of the Muslims."
76:9 "We feed you only for (the) Countenance (of) Allah. We do not desire any reward or thanks from you.
25:56 And We (have) not sent you except (as) a bearer of glad tidings and a warner. 25:57 Say, "I (do) not ask (of/from) you any payment for it, except (that) whoever/(he who) wills to/(may) take a way to his Lord."
(The Verses of the Qur’an complement each other. According to Verse 25:57, the payment is that he who wills may take a way to his Lord, so it is for people’s own benefit, rather than the Prophet hoarding money)(Allah knows best)
38:86 Say, "I (do) not ask you any payment for it, and I am not of the ones who pretend. 38:87 It (is) not/(nothing) except/(but) a Reminder to the worlds.
70:15 By no means, indeed, it is surely a Flame of Hell, … 70:17 Inviting (him) who turned his back and went away 70:18 And collected (wajama’a) and hoarded.
(It could be objected that Verses 9:60 and 70:18 contradict each other, as if collecting were good in Verse 9:60, but bad in Verse 70:18. An answer to the objection is that both Verses do not even use words with the same root, so there cannot be contradiction anyhow. Verse 9:60 uses a word with the root “Ayn-Miim-Lam”, and Verse 70:18 uses a word with the root “Jiim-Miim-Ayn”. Another point is that “collecting and hoarding” is bad, while “collecting and spending” is good. So, there is no contradiction at all)(Allah knows best)
