Which category of creature does the Qur’an put ‘Iblees’ into? Was Iblees an Angel or a Jinn?

Which category of creature does the Qur’an put ‘Iblees’ into? Was Iblees an Angel or a Jinn?

18:50 And when We said to the Angels, "Prostrate to Adam," so they prostrated except Iblees. (He) was of the jinn, and he rebelled against the Command of his Lord. Then, will you take him and his offspring as protectors other than Me, while they are enemies to you? Wretched is the exchange for the wrongdoers.

(Verse 18:50 explicitly says that Iblees was of the Jinn, not an Angel. Some non-Muslims disregard this. And Verse 18:50 indicates the moment when the Angels were commanded to prostrate, not the moment when Iblees was commanded to prostrate. And there was a moment when Iblees was also commanded to prostrate; that moment is mentioned in Verse 7:12. So, Verse 7:12 explicitly supports that Iblees was commanded to prostrate. Verse 2:34 does not specify that Iblees was of the jinn, but the Verses of the Qur’an are not mutually exclusive but complement each other, so Verse 18:50 complements Verse 2:34)(The word “when” indicates time, and it is used in Verse 18:50 (“when We said to the Angels”), and in Verse 7:12 (“when I commanded you”); “you” in Verse 7:12 is masculine singular, so it is addressed to Iblees ; these two Verses are not mutually exclusive, but Angels and Iblees were commanded to prostrate)(Allah knows best)

7:12 (Allah) said, "What prevented you from prostrating when I commanded you?" (Iblees) said, "I am better than him. You created me from fire and You created him from clay."

(According to Verse 7:12, Iblees was commanded to prostrate; and Iblees said the reason why he did not prostrate (7:12). So, his arrogant response in Verse 7:12 implicitly confirms that he acknowledged that he was commanded to prostrate, instead of responding as if he had not been commanded)(Allah knows best)

38:75 He said, "O Iblis, what prevented you from prostrating to (one) whom I created with My Hands? Are you arrogant or are you of the exalted ones." 38:76 He said, "I am better than him. You created me from fire and You created him from clay."

(The Qur’an is in Arabic, and all its Verses are linguistically correct in Arabic, so there is no any contradiction, but God intended Verse 18:50, and the Qur’an in general, to be the way it is, for a purpose (“as for those in whose hearts is a disease, it increases them in evil to their evil” (9:125); “verily, We have explained in this Qur’an, that they may take heed, but it does not increase them except in aversion” (17:41); “We reveal from the Qur’an that which is a healing and a mercy for the believers, but it does not increase the wrongdoers except in loss” (17:82); “And those who disbelieved will say, “what did Allah intend by this example? He lets go astray many by it and He guides many by it. And He does not let go astray by it except the defiantly disobedient” (2:26)))(Allah knows best)

2:34 And when We said to the angels, "Prostrate to Adam," so they prostrated, except Iblees. He refused and was arrogant and became of the disbelievers.

55:14 He created man from clay like that of pottery. 55:15 And He created the jinn from a smokeless flame of fire.

(It is said that Angels are made of light, not fire. This is confirmed in the article below “Did the Qur’an predict the speed of light?”. On the other hand, the jinn was created from fire (55:14), so the Angels and the jinn are not the same)(Allah knows best)

70:4 The Angels and the Spirit ascend to Him in a Day, its measure is fifty thousand years.

66:6 O you who believe, protect yourselves and your families from a Fire whose fuel is people and stones, over it are Angels, stern (and) severe; they do not disobey Allah in what He Commands them but they do what they are commanded.

(Jinns might disobey, so they are not angels, because the Angels never disobey (66:6))(Allah knows best)
